This is a 100% Contract position for 1 year with the possibility of extension or conversion to career status.

Responds to non-complex, basic inquiries from public or media. Responses require some research and organization of material. Assists in gathering and preparing news and information about the location.

With work direction provided by the Executive Director of the CMI, the incumbent will write and edit articles on the CMI websites and social media outlets; engage and convey the technical significance of their research projects; establish working relationships and identify new partners within industry. The incumbent will focus on digital communications and website design.

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations. Knowledge and understanding of technical applications, including design concepts, various media, and applications.

  • General knowledge of Microbiome research at UC San Diego demonstrated by written communications published through social media channels.

  • General knowledge of the usage and applications of electronic communication tools and skill in using same.

  • Working knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure. Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

  • Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen.

  • Good organizational skills.

  • Skill to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to comprehend academic research as well as industry needs and to write and translate the work in a way that is understandable to the general public.

  • Experience with and ability to use and learn software or platform including Adobe suite, CRM, Newsletter tools, Blog tools, Website platform management, etc.

  • Experience with website content management.

  • Experience creating clear, easy-to-navigate, informative, accurate, well-designed, and functional web sites that provide web content consistent with the organization's message and in keeping with management directives and client objectives.

  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.

  • Knowledge of content management systems and / or relevant web applications used for web production and organization-specific computer application programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and bring assigned projects to completion within given deadlines, exercising initiative and appropriate follow-up techniques. Produce top quality work under time constraints.

    Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 - $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

    Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 - $51.72

    Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
