Overview
Members of the Engineering Staff participate in the research and development programs at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory by designing, maintaining, operating, and improving instruments, equipment, and systems; by designing, writing, maintaining or by providing equivalent professional knowledge and skills in other disciplines necessary to carry out the Laboratory's research and development efforts.
Staff members at this rank make decisions and recommendations that are authoritative and have extensive impact on the engineering, computing, scientific, and related activities of the Laboratory. They negotiate critical and controversial decisions with senior engineers, scientists, and officers of other areas of the Laboratory and other organizations. They are creative and foresighted, and exercise mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding novel and extensive engineering, computational, or scientific programs and activities.
A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy â” a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us!
Responsibilities
Core Duties:
- Normally a Staff member at this rank is assigned a position of the high technical responsibility in the Laboratory, with responsibility for formulating and guiding efforts to solve problems of exceptional difficulty and marked importance to the Laboratory or fusion energy technology. Typically, the Staff member works on problems characterized by their lack of precedents and source material or by the failure of prior research and analysis to yield solutions, so that their solution would represent an advance of significance. The Staff member performs advisory and consulting work for the Laboratory as a recognized authority in broad areas or in a specialized area of considerable novelty and importance.
- Staff members in this position assume full responsibility for the daily and long-term management of a group of staff members. Staff at this rank are concerned with highly complex technical matters, as well as items pertaining to the group budget, personnel management and procedural relationship to other entities within the department and the laboratory.
- At this rank, a staff member receives general administrative direction from the division head.
Qualifications
Education:
- BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
>20 yearsâ™ experience in the mechanical design.
Experience in a scientific or R&D environment is desirable.
A strategic goal of PPPL is diversifying the community of scientists and engineers, ensuring equitable access, and making the STEM fields more accessible and inclusive. With this in mind, we will take into consideration equivalent work and personal experiences as well as efforts in education, outreach, or other related service activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with mechanical design and analysis: Expertise and experiences with components operating in high vacuum environments.
- Experience managing groups of technical support (Analysts & designers).
- Familiarity with SOA manufacturing processes and fabrication techniques (preferred).
- Familiarity with ANSYS FEA and CREO CAD software (preferred).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of researchers, engineers, and technicians.
Working Conditions:
- Position will be on-site at PPPL. Most work will be done in PPPL offices, shops and laboratories. Vendor visits may be required.
