Job Description Summary

The Ronald E. McNair PostBaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) at Michigan Tech is seeking a dynamic professional for the position of McNair Scholars Student Coordinator to promote and drive its mission to optimize the success of students from historically marginalized groups. The McNair Scholars Program is a grant funded program that engages in undergraduate research experiences of historically underserved and underrepresented students along with their transition to a graduate degree program. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director and Director of the McNair Scholars program (who is also the Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion), the coordinator is responsible for establishing, implementing, and assessing programs and services in support of its mission. The ideal individual needs to be committed to student-centered philosophy, engagement, practices and be a strong collaborator.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Drafting correspondence and other program written materials
2. Maintaining permanent participant files according to TRIO guidelines
3. Ordering and maintaining all supplies and equipment
4. Scheduling meetings and making travel arrangements for McNair Program staff and participants
5. Maintaining Director and Assistant Director calendars
6. Providing administrative support for all other program activities
7. Assist with organizing program events and activities
8. Maintaining and reviewing participant applications
9. Tracking all expenditures and processing all requisitions
10. Assists participants in the postsecondary and financial aid application process.
11. Editing the program newsletter and web page.
12. Attend events and work flexible hours as needed. Some evenings and weekends will be required.
13. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
14. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
15. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

● Bachelor's Degree in any field

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Extensive experience in word processing and data management

● Manage and organize spreadsheets

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Experience with categorically funded program budgets
● Experience in educational settings
● Demonstrated experiences developing and managing recruitment and/or retention-based programs for historically marginalized students.
● Working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
● Experience with identifying educational challenges and barriers faced by historically marginalized students

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Knowledge and understanding of issues significant to diverse communities.
● Ability to plan and implement educational and informational programs in a diverse cultural environment.
● Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.
● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Website development and maintenance, databases, and student tracking systems.
● Basic knowledge in social media and graphic design

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but can occasionally be higher.
