Working Title Marketing Strategist
Brief Position Overview
The Marketing Strategist will develop and implement marketing strategies to enhance and advance specific areas of MSU. In addition, they will work to generate positive affinity for MSU units and enhance the overall reputation in service to the university mission. Examples of this could include developing marketing strategies to increase enrollment, plans to improve retention, or further drive audiences to action in support of the university. The Marketing strategist ensures that all communications and infrastructure are aligned and support the goals and vision of the university’s strategic plan.
The incumbent will identify, plan, and execute communications activities designed to advance specific areas of MSU and MSU at large as assigned. The Marketing strategist plays an active role in assisting campus offices in the development, creation, and management of content for distribution through a variety of outlets. They will identify high-impact exposure and investments that can deliver a strong return on investment.
Housed in University Communications and reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, and in collaboration with areas of campus as assigned, this position interacts with all parts of University Communications: creative services, photo/video, web communications, social media, news and printing, as well as other internal constituents, to develop and implement communications strategies for priority areas.

General Statement
The mission of University Communications is to enhance MSU’s public image, increase the public’s awareness of MSU’s accomplishments, and develop consistent communications that build our reputation. University Communications manages the marketing, promotional, and licensing efforts of the university and supports and promotes MSU’s activities through expert and creative communications. We provide a wide range of services to the university community through our operational units: Montana PBS, MSU News Service, MSU Creative Services, MSU Web and Digital Communications, University Marketing, MSU Public Relations, and University Printing. Our staff includes writers, editors, designers, photographers/videographers, social and news media specialists, publications specialists, marketing specialists, and web programmers.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Establish and implement marketing communications tools and programs to elevate the reputation of, and participation in, assigned units within Montana State University.
  • Identify and implement targeted marketing and communications strategies to successfully advance the goals of university clients.
  • Prioritize workload so assigned university clients’ goals are met.
  • Research, write, and develop communications materials that advance the goals of university clients.
  • Develop marketing needs assessments in conjunction with relevant campus units such as Admissions, Planning and Analysis, or unit-specific data.
  • Develop and manage web content and social media for university clients.
  • Meet with academic, student success, and administrative units to provide the necessary support for their programs and goals.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative marketing research, analyze results, and create actionable plans.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience producing original, creative content for marketing and promotional use across all mediums.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communications concepts and products that compel target audiences to action via written, verbal, and visual communications.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the principles of graphic design, photography/video, and advertising on both print and digital platforms.
  • Experience creating and editing web pages using a content management system and developing social media content strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing communications plans and timelines.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience implementing market research tools such as surveys and focus groups.
  • Experience in higher education or complex multi-faceted organizations.

    In addition, the person in this position is an expert communicator who can effectively manage their time to accomplish multiple projects while maintaining a keen awareness of numerous variables and detail. They will possess the ability to work across all levels of campus, interact with contacts and leaders in identified units, and the ability to demonstrate exceptional written and oral communications skills, as well as strong organizational skills.
