Job Summary
University Housing & Dining Services is seeking a Marketing and Communications Manager. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The Marketing and Communications Manager is part of an internal creative services team that promotes University Housing & Dining Services at Oregon State University. UHDS’s vision is to engage OSU students, enrich their lives and help them thrive. The department offers a variety of living and dining options in 16 residence halls, more than 25 campus dining locations, a market, The Gem apartments, and Orchard Court family apartments. As an auxiliary enterprise, UHDS is funded solely by customers who utilize these programs. UHDS is committed to an appreciation for diversity, and is dedicated to fostering an open, respectful and enjoyable living, learning and working environment.
A primary emphasis for this position is to create, implement and track targeted marketing plans for new and existing university-wide programs that support students, and the larger OSU community. These programs include, but are not limited to: UHDS residential dining, University Catering, Orange Cash, robot food delivery and summer housing. This is a highly collaborative role that facilitates project success from determination of scope to completion. Some sample projects for this role include promoting menus and specials with the dining team, marketing programs with the residential education unit, communicating assignments processes with the operations unit, new business development, and executing branding in UHDS buildings with various unit partners.

Key Responsibilities
30% Targeted Program Marketing
  • Working with the Director, Assistant Director, and other marketing managers, this
  • position directs and implements tactics to meet year-round marketing goals, including determining budget, scope and deadlines.
  • This position is a lead marketing role in the development of strategies and implementation of program marketing. The marketing manager develops campaigns, supervises design work of student staff, reviews production of promotions, and assesses outcomes to apply to future planning. The role provides direction and review of projects, leads client meetings, and establishes goals and objectives for each initiative.
  • The marketing manager collaborates closely with UHDS Dining Services colleagues to develop content and messaging for targeted outreach events and programs. The marketing manager promotes on-campus restaurants, markets and cafes and works with the dining team on additional opportunities for revenue generation.
  • The marketing manager ensures that marketing tactics support the retention goals and resident satisfaction goals outlined by leadership. This role assesses future opportunities for increasing the recruitment and retention of students from year-to-year and term-to-term in UHDS facilities and programs, including an increased enrollment of transfer students and second year and above students living on campus.

25% Content Development and Brand Management
  • The Marketing and Communications Manager develops ideas, content and copywriting for marketing communications and campaigns. This includes content for brochures, advertisements, e-newsletters, social media platforms, digital displays, menus and web pages. The manager has discretion on content and imagery for event promotion and feature stories to highlight UHDS initiatives and programs. The manager serves as a storyteller, sharing department highlights to generate local and national interest in housing and dining programs, as well as supporting the narrative of the student experience for prospective students to campus.
  • The marketing manager serves as web administrator by creating content for the web, managing web updates and structure changes, and editing all UHDS pages as needed. The role also has responsibility in the daily operations of UHDS social media accounts and contributes to a calendar for social media content. The marketing manager assists in developing a digital media strategy and content to engage audiences on Facebook, Instagram and other emerging social media platforms. This role plans and creates content for digital communications with the intent of leveraging effective storytelling to feature department initiatives and programs, and the experiences of on-campus residents, dining customers and constituents of UHDS services.
  • This position will help develop and implement the overall brand presence for residential and retail dining services, including University Catering and University Bakeshop. They work closely with the Director and Assistant Director to manage the department’s overall brand, and adhere to all OSU brand guidelines, including visual components and messaging.

20% Student Staff Supervision
  • The Marketing and Communications Manager provides leadership, training and assistance for student staff. In collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director, the role oversees a creative team of designers/photographers and digital media students carrying out the campaigns and creative projects initiated by the unit or requested by department partners. The marketing manager also recruits and selects student staff and creates and revises position descriptions. They maintain supervision files and document performance issues.
  • This position reviews work for design principles, OSU brand standards and best practices to ensure high-quality execution within time constraints and budget parameters. They provide appropriate feedback and support to student staff in order to meet deadlines and project scope.

10% Department Representation
  • The Marketing and Communications Manager serves as a department representative, speaking on behalf of UHDS to prospective and admitted students and families about the housing application process and life on campus, at off-site Admissions events, START orientation sessions and on-campus visit days. They work closely with colleagues in the Office of Admissions and the Office of Student Orientation to represent on-campus housing opportunities for all potential campus residents. Travel is limited but expected during these peak recruitment seasons.
  • This position works closely with OSU colleagues, resource offices and community partners focused on the recruitment and retention of OSU students from marginalized communities and identities. This includes attendance at events geared to engage first-generation and/or students from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. In addition, this position may serve on divisional committees or campus-wide initiatives on behalf of UHDS.

10% Marketing Assessment
  • This role provides leadership in data-based decision making to meet the marketing goals of programs and services. This includes routine assessment of marketing efforts via analytics, surveys, occupancy metrics and cash sales tracking.
  • The marketing manager supports periodic department student feedback sessions by facilitating groups and providing suggestions to the department based on findings.
  • They also track search engine optimization (SEO) and other analytics to monitor and report web traffic, user engagement on social media sites, and trending issues related to the department. They oversee any paid Search Engine Marketing (SEM) tactics outsourced to vendors or managed in-house.

5% Other Duties as Assigned
What You Will Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in business/marketing, journalism, public relations, new media communications, graphic design or a field relevant to the duties outlined in the position description.
  • At least three years of professional experience leading or supporting the development, implementation and management of marketing strategies and tactics while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience with self-directed work, including managing several competing creative projects with multiple components, such as graphic design, copywriting, web development, video and photography.
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, such as the ability to build relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Strong written communication skills, including copywriting and editing.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including presentation skills (public speaking).
  • Demonstrated experience with online marketing, including an understanding of digital advertising, e-newsletter development, analytics, and promotions through various social media platforms.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative working partnerships with stakeholders to accomplish goals and initiatives.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

  • Advanced understanding of design principles as related to the development of communications and marketing materials.
  • Understanding of and experience with Adobe Creative Suite software.
  • Experience with photography and/or videography.
  • Experience working within an integrated brand system.
  • Written and oral Spanish-language proficiency.
  • Experience using Drupal or a similar content management tool for creating/editing websites.
  • Experience using digital marketing tools and systems such as digital e-newsletter platforms, CRMs, project management software and social media tools and platforms.
  • Marketing or recruiting experience in a university setting interacting with prospective students and families.
  • Professional or personal experiences working with culturally, linguistically and racially diverse communities.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Position is in a standard office environment, with a shared creative suite. This position has extended periods of time working at a computer. Hours are typically 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. but that may vary and include weekend hours on occasion for event participation. Some events will require long periods of standing at a table. Requirements for limited travel during peak seasons; may include weekend travel once or twice a year. Many elements of this role require in-person attendance, but there’s the possibility of a remote work agreement to allow for a hybrid work schedule.
