Manufacturing Engineer

POSITION: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has multiple openings for a Manufacturing Engineer in Berkeley , CA.

 

Duties: Coordinate the fabrication of mechanical vacuum assemblies and equipment for ALS-U. Create work instructions, quality assurance documents, test and inspection plans, and other plans to support validation of delivered components. Write specifications for technically complex procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements. Provide assistance with establishing performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing, assembly, and testing. Participate in developing project scope and estimate related logistics (time/cost estimates, assembly/installation timelines). Assist with the implementation of manufacturing and quality procedures including non-conformance and deviation reporting; oversee engineering change order processes. Explore and validate cost-effective and timely solutions for complex and often technically challenging projects. Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment. Participate in cross-functional teams of procurement, engineering, technician, and management stakeholders for vendor oversight and issue tracking. Review vendor-generated design and end-item documentation/data packages for integrity and completeness. Collaborate with technical staff to assist in identification and resolution of issues with QC (Quality Control) processes, QC documentation, and technical issues with hardware. Track and report on material location and status during all phases from fabrication to final acceptance and handoff primarily by means of inventory management software. Facilitate material inspection, substitution, standardization, rework, salvage, utilization, and economical procurement of parts and equipment. On a project basis, manage all aspects of procurement and the subsequent material handling/assembly onsite through the full project life cycle. Visit and audit vendors, as appropriate. Design engineering of test support equipment (for example, adapters and fixtures, equipment installation and facility integration, equipment reconfiguration). Convey technical information to procurement staff. (For example, technical aspects of drawings, understanding of technical issues; advice on vendor qualifications, technical details of contract, or proposal wording). Provide manufacturing oversight to technical staff assigned to engineering projects. May telecommute.

 

Benefits: This full salary range of this position is between $91,956  to $155,136  per year depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

 

Requirements: Employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field, and 2 years of experience in the job offered, or in an engineering-related occupation.

Position requires:

1. Technical management of large scale procurement contracts with external vendors for complex scientific parts/equipment for high technology applications;

2.  Project and cost management experience including manufacturing cost estimation, supplier capability analysis and detailed scheduling;

3.  In-depth understanding in the interpretation of part, assembly, detail, and weldment drawings;

4.  Implementation of GD&T including tolerance definition and control;

5.  Validation of manufactured parts, including definition of validation methods and the use of appropriate dimensional metrology;

6.  3D parametric CAD modeling skills;

7.  Fabrication and assembly process knowledge and manufacturing input into design (design for manufacture), including selection of manufacturing processes and materials;

8.  Experience with ultra-high vacuum systems in the 1x10-6 to 1x10-10 Torr range;

9.  Implementation of appropriate QA/QC processes and controls in the acquisition of complex technical equipment manufactured externally; and

10.  Writing technical documentation, such as work instructions, requirements and specifications.
