DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

Development & Alumni Relations (DEVAR) provides leadership in building enduring public trust, understanding, and support for UC Davis and its mission of teaching, research, and public service. DEVAR provides leadership, coordination and support services to help the university meet its mission of research, teaching and service by building philanthropic support and executing approved fundraising programs that support the university’s highest priorities and initiatives.

The UC Davis Graduate School of Management (GSM) is focused on preparing the next generation of inspired, innovative and collaborative leaders who are committed to making a positive impact. The GSM offers students a Masters of Business (MBA) degree in Davis, Sacramento, San Ramon, and on-line; Masters of Management (MM) degree in Davis and on-line; Masters of Professional Accounting (MPAC) degree in Davis; Masters of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) in San Francisco; Undergraduate Minor in Technology Management in Davis; various Executive Education programs in Davis.  The development unit at the GSM supports all of these programs according to the priorities set by the GSM Dean and the opportunities available.

The UC Davis School of Education’s Office of Development & External Relations provides leadership, support, coordination, and management of activities for the School of Education, including the solicitation, acceptance and acknowledgment of private contributions and is responsible to advance a positive image of the School, engage alumni and provide visibility for the School to its internal and external constituents. The UC Davis School of Education is transforming education through preparation of the best education leaders, researchers, and teachers in the country. The School of Education trains teachers and education leaders using the latest and most innovative teaching practices, and by conducting and disseminating cutting-edge research to improve instruction. The School of Education was founded in 2002, although teacher training at UC Davis dates back to 1918. Since its founding, the School has doubled the number of faculty and staff. The teaching credential program, continues to grow, as do faculty grants and financial support from alumni and friends. The School of Education’s faculty and graduate students are engaged on local and regional levels and with national and international educational reform and policy. The mission of the School is to use the power of knowledge and the promise of education to eliminate inequities and create opportunities for all learners.


JOB SUMMARY 
Under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, School & Units Program (AVCSUP) with dotted line reporting to the Deans of the Graduate School of Management (GSM) and School of Education (SOE), the Managing Executive Director of Development is responsible for the strategic oversight of development efforts for the design, development, delivery, and implementation of fundraising programs for the GSM (70% time) and SOE (30% time). 

Responsible for managing a team of four unit-based development professionals, assisting in the oversight of unit-based development efforts, and raising significant private support in the form of major philanthropic gifts from individuals.

This position maintains a portfolio of donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors in the Graduate School of Management and School of Education, and may have the authority to make commitments and precedent-setting decisions regarding program design, development, and procedures.  This position is metric-driven and expected to raise gift dollar amounts as established by the Graduate School of Management and School of Education, and aligned with the assigned portfolio. This is a fundraising position focused on the stewarding existing and new major donor relationships. Guided by a “donor centric” approach, the incumbent will strategically solicit gifts using various communication methods, including in person, video, texting, phone, social media and virtual visits. This position requires good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions, and works independently, collaboratively, and collegially as part of a diverse, matrix organization.

The Managing Executive Director of Development, GSM and SOE coordinates and oversees the work of several fundraising staff, as well as support staff and/or other general staff positions as assigned.

Assist with volunteer management including advisory board activities and including having the primary responsibility for the strategy and implementation of board growth and direction, coordination, strategic planning, and collaboration internally and with development colleagues across campus to ensure donor-centric communications and major gifts strategy. Manage a budget for development units under direct supervision.

POSITION INFORMATION

Salary Range

$112,400 - $246,000/yr. 

Departmental Salary Budget is $180,000 – $185,000/yr., commensurate with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of seven years of professional or volunteer fundraising experience involving a major gifts prospect portfolio management as a front-line fundraiser, including knowledge of proven cultivation/solicitation techniques for gifts at all dollar levels with identified success in major gift fundraising. Successful experience soliciting $1 million+ gifts.
  • Experience designing, directing and participating in major comprehensive campaigns in large, complex institutions, and working in a centralized and decentralized fundraising environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with board level volunteers, donors and prospects as well as with their legal and financial advisors, development colleagues and with senior university leaders and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing needs and creating strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs.
  • Experience supervising staff to ensure accountability and stewardship of resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with unit goals and objectives. Including demonstrated experience working in a metrics-driven environment and ensuring that predetermined fundraising goals are met.
  • Experience recruiting, training, evaluating, motivating, and coaching employees of various backgrounds and identities. Documented experience building a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion amongst team members.
  • Senior-level experience using excellent written and oral communication skills to prepare various types of high-level and confidential communication including briefings, proposals and other written presentations, and marketing materials.

Preferred

  • Leadership experience both in a senior management position and in working as a team. Able to demonstrate strong political acumen and ability to manage multiple stakeholders in a complex matrix organization. 
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in higher education development successfully closing primary major and principal level gifts, $1M+.
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex university academic structures in order to effectively coordinate with various university-wide leaders and professional development colleagues.
  • Intellectual depth and collaborative skills to gamer the trust and confidence of senior university leadership and chief development officers university-wide.
