Development & Alumni Relations (DEVAR) provides leadership in building enduring public trust, understanding, and support for UC Davis and its mission of teaching, research, and public service. DEVAR provides leadership, coordination and support services to help the university meet its mission of research, teaching and service by building philanthropic support and executing approved fundraising programs that support the university's highest priorities and initiatives.
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, School & Units Program (AVCSUP) with a dotted line reporting to the Dean of the College of Biological Sciences (CBS), the Managing Executive Director of Development (EDOD) is responsible for the strategic oversight of development efforts for the design, development, delivery, and implementation of fundraising programs for CBS. Responsible for managing a team of unit-based development professionals, assisting in the oversight of unit-based development efforts, and raising significant private support in the form of major philanthropic gifts from individuals.
This is a metric-driven position functioning as a UC Davis major gifts officer, operating in full compliance with development polices and collaborating with other development professionals throughout the university. Responsible for identifying new donor prospects through researching background information on potential donors and developing materials, fundraising plans, and organizing campus-wide site visits and related programs/events. Cultivate, steward, and solicit donor prospects as well as orchestrates solicitations with senior campus officials.

Salary Range
$ 112,400.00 - $ 246,000.00/yr.
Departmental Salary Budget is $179,000 - $195,000/yr., commensurate with experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work occasional weekend and evening engagements as well as travel regionally is required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum:
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of five years of professional or volunteer fundraising experience involving a major gifts prospect portfolio management as a front-line fundraiser, including knowledge of proven cultivation/solicitation techniques for gifts at all dollar levels with identified success in major gift fundraising. Successful experience soliciting $1 million+ gifts.
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including strategies for donor identification, cultivation and solicitation and experience as a fundraiser in a major comprehensive campaign for a large, complex institution. Experience working in a centralized and decentralized fundraising environment is a plus.
  • Fundraising leader with demonstrated experience analyzing needs and creating strategic and long-range plans for fundraising and other advancement programs; previous experience working effectively with volunteers, donors and prospects as well as with their legal and financial advisors, development colleagues and with senior university leaders and volunteers.
  • Strong leadership / management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff. Strong knowledge of management / leadership concepts, principles and best practices. Experience recruiting, training, evaluating, motivating, and coaching employees of various backgrounds and identities. Documented experience building a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion amongst team members.
  • Demonstrated success working in a metrics-driven environment and ensuring that predetermined fundraising goals are met individually and preferably, as a team.
  • Senior-level experience using excellent written and oral communication skills to prepare various types of high-level and confidential communication including briefings, proposals and other written presentations, and marketing materials.

Preferred:
  • Experience supervising frontline fundraising professionals in a higher education, college or university, setting, ensuring accountability and stewardship of resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with unit goals and objectives.
  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible major gift ($50K+) fundraising experience in a higher education setting; successful gifts closed in the 7-8 figure range.
  • Experience recruiting, training, evaluating, motivating, and coaching employees of various backgrounds and identities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of complex university academic structures in order to effectively coordinate with various university-wide leaders and professional development colleagues.
  • Intellectual depth and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of senior university leadership and chief development officers university-wide.
