The Role
The University of Chicago Crime Lab and Education Lab are seeking a full-time Managing Director to provide scientific, intellectual, and organizational leadership for both the Crime Lab and the Education Lab. In this role, the Managing Director will be expected to provide motivating leadership and mentorship to staff, and to develop an organizational infrastructure to support anticipated growth and ensure that programmatic objectives are supported internally. They will be charged with articulating the strategic vision for building and maintaining the diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary research; identifying new partnerships and funding opportunities; developing both short- and long-term strategic plans to execute the organization’s mission; cultivating and maintaining relationships with University leadership. By working closely with our Research Directors, the Managing Director will contribute to the scientific content of research proposals and fundraising efforts, and support dissemination and policymaker outreach activities.


Job Summary
 

The role provides divisional leadership through directing the development of strategic priorities and plans to assist the Dean or top leader of a unit. Establishes programmatic initiatives and sets high-level organizational structures for processes and systems, contributing to key University goals with a campus-wide or institutional impact. Determines and oversees the financial objectives of the unit and ensures that the unit is compliant with guidelines and performance expectations. Has a team of senior managers to carry out the work in the areas of Academic Affairs, Communications, Facilities, Finances-Grants-Budget, Human Resources, and/or Technology.

Responsibilities

  • Develops short- and medium-term strategy for the organization, in collaboration with the Faculty Director and Executive Director, to promote the mission of both the Crime Lab and the Education lab.

  • Oversees the internal infrastructure that makes it possible to execute on organizational strategy. This is achieved by managing the work of others through subordinates, mostly managers. In this capacity, oversees the daily operations of the organization and the efforts of the Leadership Team.

  • Operationalizes the Faculty Director’s vision and goals for our research portfolio which currently includes 85 projects, involves staff in Chicago and New York, as well as a growing network of stakeholders throughout the country.

  • Proactively manages changes and expansions throughout the organization, striving to establish sustainable growth, minimize losses, and maintain employee engagement.

  • In collaboration with the Research Directors, manages relationships with external Principal Investigators and ensures that projects remain faithful to the vision of each Principal Investigator.

  • Establishes strong working relationships and collaborative arrangements across campus, with community groups, funders, policy makers, and other organizations to help achieve the day-to-day work of moving research projects forward.

  • Works with the Leadership Team to develop an organizational infrastructure that will support anticipated growth and ensures that programmatic objectives are supported internally.

  • Directly supervises the Director of Programs, the Senior Manager of Data and Analytics, the Associate Managing Director, and 7+ Research Directors.

  • Manages employees throughout the organizations by guiding the development of performance goals, allocating resources, and assessing policies for direct subordinates.

  • Serves as an example of leadership to individuals and teams throughout the organization.

  • As necessary, directly supports the work of individual research project teams by providing strategic guidance around scientific direction, partner management, and the establishment of internal processes.

  • Contribute to the scientific content of research proposals and fundraising efforts, and support dissemination and policymaker outreach activities.

  • Provides support to and collaborates with internal University partners, government and non-profit partners.

  • Serves as high-level representative for a unit, and structures the framework for partnership development with other academic, research, and administrative units with the unit and of the University.

  • Manages employees through senior managers. Oversees the development of performance goals, establishes the structure for allocating resources and assessing division or University policies.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. in public/social policy, economics, criminology, statistics or other relevant field with substantial policy and research experience, strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • The successful candidate will have expertise in all aspects of the research design, methods, and evaluation of research projects.

  • Applicants must have substantial policy and research experience.

  • Preference will be given to those with proven experience leading successful interdisciplinary collaborations.

  • Experience in criminal justice or related area of social policy, and with a deep understanding of policy efforts to address urban problems, as well as a record of obtaining research grants, also is a plus.

Preferred Competencies

  • Track record of leading and mentoring staff to achieve objectives of an organization's strategic goals.

  • Experience developing organizational strategy.

  • Expertise in all aspects of the research design, methods, and evaluation of research projects.
