Managing Director of Experiential Learning - (240000MT)

The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law is seeking a Managing Director of Experiential Learning.

Established in 1824, the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law is the fourth oldest law school in the nation and the state's flagship law school. Home to top scholars and change-makers, Maryland Carey Law is a leader in legal education, scholarship, and community engagement. Maryland Carey Law is advantageously located in downtown Baltimore near multiple courthouses, government agencies, prominent law and financial firms, nonprofit organizations, major-league sports facilities, theaters, and fine arts. The law school campus also is easily accessible within the greater Washington DC-Baltimore metropolitan region, close to I-95 and only 40 minutes from Washington by Amtrak or commuter rail.

Our clinical and externship programs ensure that our students graduate from law school understanding the role and professional responsibilities of lawyers and having developed tangible skills while expanding access to legal services in our community. Each year, more than 20 faculty and approximately 150 student attorneys provide more than 75,000 hours of free legal services to the community, making the Clinical Law Program one of the region's largest public interest law firms. Maryland Carey Law was the first law school program in the country to receive the John Minor Wisdom Award, the American Bar Association's leading public service honor, and in 2023, the Clinical Law Program celebrated its 50th anniversary. Externships enable students to earn academic credit for legal experiences across a variety of settings.

The Managing Director of Experiential Learning, with the payroll title of Managing Director, Clinical Law Program, is a critical member of the management team of the Clinical Law Program.  This position oversees and monitors Clinic activities including budgets, accounts, client services, personnel, and procurement.  The Managing Director is the first to be consulted with administrative matters of the Program, deferring to the Faculty Director as appropriate.  Responding to the needs of faculty and 100+ students per semester is a regular staple of the job. Ensuring that the highest level of client service is delivered, the Managing Director is the administrative anchor of the Clinical Law Program and is expected to use their legal expertise in client service, case management and administration to work with the professors and attorneys in the Clinical Law Program.  The Managing Director reports to the Faculty Director of the Clinical Law Program.

The Managing Director of Experiential Learning will also oversee the operation of the law school’s Externship Program, including the cultivation and advertising of externship opportunities for students, the design and delivery of the curriculum for externship workshops to support students’ professional development and ensure compliance with externship standards set by the American Bar Association.
