Job Description Summary | The search will remain open until the position has been filled. First consideration will be given to applications received by May 22, 2024. Applications received after May 22, 2024, may be reviewed depending on search progress and needs, but are not guaranteed full consideration. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ BASIC FUNCTION: Responsible for managing computing and information technology and associated activities in support of the College of Engineering (COE) academic, research, and community engagement enterprise. |
Duties and Responsibilities | ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinate network connectivity with URI Information Technology Services (ITS) within the engineering departments, assist with connectivity between building, faculty, staff, and students. Serve as main liaison between the COE and URI ITS. Establish and enforce policies regarding the Engineering Computer Center (ECC). Manage the implementation of these policies and services for the effective operation of the ECC. Prepare and administer the ECC budget. Responsible for the ECC’s entire procurement process and expenditures, including the following: interaction with vendors to determine the best hardware and software available, negotiation of leases, agreements, and contracts, obtaining quotes, requisitions, and budget management. Evaluate and select hardware and software systems to ensure optimal computing activities, supervise personnel, provide installation of systems, system maintenance, and problem resolution. Oversee support of operating systems and servers including the determination of alternatives for various configurations of operating systems. Responsible for providing central computing services for all COE faculty and staff, including user account management, disk usage, e-mail, and web services through student worker management. Provide central support as needed for the department’s technical and computing staff members. Develop and maintain annual inventory of software licenses for departmental teaching needs. Develop, implement, and manage ECC student staffing plan, including responsibility for entire employment process to include recruitment and selection, hiring documentation and job creation, training and performance management, scheduling, and supervising workloads; and assigning and managing student projects. Supervise system programming tasks including installing and upgrading software packages, adapting software to the needs of user community, and writing new, and modifying existing, programs as required. Develop and manage a proactive customer-orientated computing requirements program for the College, including all engineering departments and the ECC. Recommend available options for effective use of computing resources for academic and research activities. Use available information to forecast future growth of computing requirements. Work closely with the College to develop a vision and strategic plan for the College’s computing requirements, to include interaction with vendors, contractors, architects, and engineers to implement the College’s Master Plan. Develop and distribute written documentation to publicize and encourage the use of resources and a service available in the ECC. Provide personal assistance to users and assist in outreach programs. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Respond to technical emergencies outside of normal working hours. Occasionally work a non-standard schedule to fulfill assigned duties and responsibilities. Attend technology related University meetings. Provide Classroom instruction and training courses. Engage in professional development activities to ensure knowledge, skills, and abilities are contemporary. Participate in project management and strategic planning activities. Perform other related duties as assigned. LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT: Personal Computers, servers, routers, printer/plotters, mobile device; word processing, database management, spreadsheet, e-mail, web, network, imaging and cloning, enterprise, graphics, and engineering software applications. |
Required Qualifications | REQUIRED: 1. Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, engineering, or related field. 2. Minimum of three years of experience delivering and managing computing services in a technical or engineering environment with a Windows client in a UNIX-network computer environment. 3. Demonstrated knowledge of application software and hardware used to support a technical or engineering computing environment. 4. Demonstrated supervisory experience. 5. Demonstrated customer service skills. 6. Demonstrated experience managing and leading technical teams in a computing environment. 7. Demonstrated project management skills. 8. Demonstrated experience with general productivity application software (i.e., database management systems). 9. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills. 10. Demonstrated written communication skills. 11. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations. |
Preferred Qualifications | PREFERRED: 1. Master of Science degree in computer science, engineering, or related field. 2. Minimum of five years or experience delivering and managing computing services in a technical and/or engineering environment. 3.
