Description

 

The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties.  

To manage and direct the activities of Health Physics Leads, Health Physics Associates and Health Physics Assistants, and develop and manage the UAB Exposure Producing Machine Program. To inspect medical radioactive materials licenses, particle accelerator registrations and laser safety registrations. To assist in the development and management of the UAB Ionizing and Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Management Programs. To calculate and evaluate doses required for patient release, and to develop and review proper procedures and guidelines to ensure regulatory compliance in conjunction with leadership and staff in Radiation Oncology, Advanced Imaging, Cyclotron Facility, Nuclear Medicine/Molecular Imaging and Therapeutics. To oversee the compliance, testing, installation and inspections of various types of machinery at UAB that produce radiation. To ensure the maintenance of records as required for compliance with UAB, County, Alabama and federal regulations. To assist the Radiation Safety Officer and Health Physics Staff as needed. To assist in the completion of quarterly and annual radiation safety reports.

 

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

·        Manages, trains and oversees the day-to-day activities of the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Health Physics Leads, Health Physics Associates, and Health Physics Assistants.

·        Ensures the UAB Office of Radiation Safety (ORS) is adequately staffed to manage daily activities.

·        Manages the testing, installation and inspections of machinery that produce radiation. Manages the calibration of radiological survey instruments, and adjusts, manipulates and repairs instruments as needed. Ensures acceptance testing, calibration and quality control checks are made at the required intervals for all equipment that apply.

·        Manages and oversees the conduct of inspections of all Radioactive Material Licenses and Registrations and the survey of patient events for compliance with state and federal regulations. Inspects Medical Radioactive Material Licenses.

·        Manages the inventory that tracks all medical and non-medical Exposure Producing Machines (EPM), and all radioactive materials at UAB, and ensures that all EPMs are calibrated, inspected and registered with the UAB ORS and the Jefferson County Health Department as required. Ensures the calibration of all neutron detecting instrumentation owned by UAB entities

·        Works closely with the UAB Laser Safety Committee and serves as a member of the UAB EPM Task Force. Provides documentation for the quarterly Radiation Safety Committee meetings.

·        Develops, presents and ensures presentation of training to all at UAB who are required to receive training in radiological safety. Ensures that all records of training are maintained, and meets regulatory and retention requirements.

·        Reviews and maintains the comprehensive UAB radioactive materials inventory, and tracks the use, storage and disposal of radioactive materials at UAB. Schedules and performs the leak testing of all sealed sources as required.

·        Serves as back-up for on-call and emergency response to patient radiation surveys and radiation incidents. Serves as a subject matter expert along side the Radiation Safety Officer and the Deputy Radiation Safety Office in Emergency Type R emergencies as required, including the activation of the university's radiation emergency response protocols.

·        Develops, implements and manages the UAB Exposure Producing Machine Program.

·        Performs other duties as assigned.

 

STARTING ANNUAL RATE OF PAY:  $57,940.00 - $75,320.00 - $94,150.00 (Commensurate with experience & qualifications)

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree in Physical Science, Health Physics, Physics, Environmental Science, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry or a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:

Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

·        Solid understanding of health physics, environmental physics, calibrations, and analytical services

·        A high degree of proficiency in Calculus and Physics

·        Demonstrated ability to promote and maintain good interpersonal relationships, and a proficiency in team building, conflict resolution, and group interaction

·        Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively

·        Strong leadership skills

·        Advanced written and verbal communication skills

 

PERSONAL: Required to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities that require performing tasks requiring wearing respirator, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus, frequent traveling, prolonged standing, climbing stairs, and sitting at computer for long periods of time.
