The role of this position requires solid clinical knowledge and experience in developing, implementing and providing operational support for clinical information systems. This role will seek to optimize clinical system report writing to meet departmental and organizational data needs. This individual must be able to foster teamwork through collaboration with clinicians, project managers, vendors, regulatory agencies and technical experts to ensure the design and deployment of information that will result in improved care and outcomes for our patients.

The The Clinical Informatics Manager requires solid clinical knowledge and experience in developing, implementing and providing day to day operational support and integration guidance for ambulatory clinical information systems. Through their function, the Clinical Informatics Manager maintains the integrity of multiple systems, operations, and accelerates the benefit and improvements available from various applications utilized by staff and providers.The Manger is responsible for communicating, collaborating, and working with Ambulatory staff and IT teams to assist Leadership in design and continuously improve Cerner, additional ambulatory systems, and related IT and operations endeavors, serving as a liaison between IT and Ambulatory. This role will seek to optimize clinical system report writing to meet departmental and organizational data needs. This individual must be able to foster teamwork through collaboration with clinicians, project managers, vendors, regulatory agencies, providers, management, administration and technical experts to ensure the design and deployment of information that will result in improved care and outcomes for our patients and operational efficiencies. The individual must use expert knowledge to aggregate data from disparate systems and create analytics to solve healthcare problems or support decision making operationally, clinically and financially. Providing leadership in workflow analysis, confirm functionality validity as it relates to recognized regulatory and professional standards, recommend best practice application of available technology to end users, and prepare educational materials targeting improving the accuracy of documentation in the electronic medical record, thus allowing for detailed data retrieval/report generation. The individual will be responsible for concise, accurate and well complied information. The Clinical Informatics Manager will may work with large scale data sets, and apply analytics (including situation applications) in response to end user requirements.

Essential Duties:

  • Clinical Information Systems: • Systems expertise – proficient in design and use of clinical systems, troubleshooting, and development of troubleshooting guidelines. This includes but is not limited to Cerner Keck Care, Orders to Scheduling, ARM, Tonic, etc. • Education – Possesses excellent teaching and presentation skills and supports the education and training departments in developing content, creating learning resource modules, and providing training to clinicians on information technology systems in the practice environment. Identify staff educational needs; initiate and implement individual action plans to maintain staff competence; provide continuous support and acts as a resource to staff. • Problem solving – ability to describe the problem (using data collected), identify possible solutions, select a solution with rationale for decisions made, develop new monitoring tools to ensure sustainable improvements, and know when to escalate problem when necessary. • Aggregates data from quality data systems and creates analytics to solve healthcare problems or support decision making operationally, clinically and financially form for Ambulatory Clinical data systems. • Expert knowledge in the report writing and report display for all clinical databases with a focus on lthe Ambulatory Clinics data. • Monitors application use, system performance, and stability collaborating with applicable individuals to resolve any issues proactively or as they are found. Is proactive in this approach to ensure timely data reports and flow of information. • Secures and reports user input in design development: works closely with new initiative design processes for Meaningful use and any other regulatory mandates. • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in identifying opportunities for improvement from the analysis of data • Act as liaison between IT and clinical departments, translating business processes into technical requirements. • Works closely with the IT and analyst staff in troubleshooting and development of trouble shooting guidelines. • Understanding of how other departmental systems integrate to support and enable clinical data reporting that supports quality and other interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Leadership: • Manages the implementation, training, and evaluation, of all Clinical databases with a focus on the Ambulatory clinical database. Seeks to gain knowledge on the operation of the database as updates occur to keep abreast of new changes. • Works with the department data analysts in developing, supporting and activating disaster recovery strategies in times of need. • Aggregates data from quality data systems and creates analytics to solve healthcare problems or support decision making operationally, clinically and financially form Ambulatory Clinical data systems. • Takes the lead in Project Managing any new quality databases to ensure data reports and display meet the needs of the department. • Working in collaboration with members of different services (i.e. Nursing, Medical Staff, Information Systems, Clinical Lab, Radiology, and other departments) to promote teamwork resulting in efficient processes and systems. • Working in collaboration with Medical and Nursing Staff, and Ambulatory Management to support USC Care needs for data reporting to support quality initiatives, regulatory requirements and other data reporting requirements. • Provide clinical and informatics expertise to help design, implement, and train clinicians and staff • Recommend and in collaboration with Leadership develops and implements metrics and performance targets to ensure compliance with operational standards. • Manages conflict constructively. Interacts with others in a constructive manner, encourages sharing of ideas, and displays respect for different opinions. • Role models professional behavior and customer service. • Listens, remains open-minded, and is approachable and follows chain of command. • Understanding of Cerner Specialty modules (Oncology) in order to provide applicable training to providers and staff.
  • Ambulatory Process, Quality and Process Improvement: • Investigates documentation issues and incidents and follows-up with manager and/ or their designee, including staff members as needed. • Understands ambulatory processes and effectively guides design of clinical systems to support practice and process. • Reports and participates in the problem solving of issues related to quality data base system functionality both locally and at enterprise impact level. • Actively participates in organizing, accessing and reporting data for quality improvement needs within the organization, including routine reporting, cleaning and submitting data to external sources such as CMS, the Joint Commission, STS, etc., providing end user education and support for data queries and data mining activities. • Knowledge of policy, practice standards, regulatory and compliance requirements and ensures these elements are present in existing and future clinical information system design and build. • Understands LEAN process and partners with interdisciplinary team to design systems that enable better efficiency and improved care. • Recommends and assists Leadership with the development of improvement plans in conjunction with department/unit leaders in response to identified deficiencies

Required Qualifications:

  • Req High school or equivalent
  • Req Bachelor's degree Computer Science, Information Systems, Informatics Discipline, or a Related Field.
  • Req 3-5 years Experience to include implementation, testing, and on-going support of clinical application(s)
  • Req 2 years Health Care Information Technology (HCIT) consulting work experience.
  • Req Must have advance knowledge of Ambulatory workflow experience
  • Req Self-starter with ability to identify opportunities for improvement and drive change initiatives
  • Req Ability to work independently with minimal instruction to prioritize and organize work assignments and / or projects.
  • Req Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Req Strong presentation skills to executives and chief clinicians
  • Req Ability to train others and support the development of training materials


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Master's degree Degree in a related field
  • Pref Cerner Oncology experience preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $110,240.00 - $181,896.00.
