Position Summary Information


General Information
University Advising’s well-respected Madison Advising Peers (MAP) program consists of undergraduate peer advisors who are trained to provide supplemental academic advising for JMU students in conjunction with faculty and full-time academic advisors. Madison Advising Peers are friendly, supportive and knowledgeable resource for their fellow students and are committed to helping them achieve their college goals. MAPs are selected based on a formal interview, academic record, experience, and attitude. This offer of employment is contingent on budget availability. This position will be working at the Advising and Support Center College of Business.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide JMU undergraduates with information about university expectations, academic policies, and procedures. This includes reading an academic requirements report, understanding General Education requirements, and declaring a major, minor or pre-professional program.
  • Increase student knowledge of and confidence in utilizing academic advising tools (e.g., MyMadison and course catalog) and campus resources, while making appropriate referrals.
  • Help students understand their role in the academic advising process and how best to work with their faculty or full-time advisor.
  • Employ active listening skills to clearly understand student concerns and questions. Demonstrate empathy and respect for students’ right to make their own decisions.
  • Increase student awareness of special opportunities on campus such as study abroad, internships, and competitive scholarships.
  • Contribute to student outreach and events and deliver workshops to students on academic topics that include degree requirements, academic planning, General Education and academic success skills.
  • Explain lower-level BBA core and business administration majors.
  • Assist with COB 300 group sessions.
  • Meet with prospective students and families.
  • Keep appointment calendar up to date.
  • Attend front desk and help with advisors appointment check in.
Qualifications
  • Enrollment at JMU for at least one semester, including Spring 2024, at time of application and completion of at least 24 JMU credit hours by the end of Spring 2024.
  • Required: Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Students must be a declared College of Business major.
  • Availability to work 10 hours per week between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and to attend regular team meetings, trainings, and evening programming during the academic year.
  • Students must be available to attend in person mandatory MAP training from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 19th and 20th, 2024, prior to the start of classes.

Conditions of Employment
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
