Unit Mission Statement | Founded in 1975, Literacy for Life is an independent 501© 3 organization located in William and Mary’s School of Education. Literacy for Life’s mission is to empower adults by building foundational skills for success in life and work. Literacy for Life provides professional instruction and volunteer tutoring in reading, writing, math, English language, citizenship, computer skills, high school completion (GED and NEDP), health literacy, workplace readiness, and preparation for post-secondary programs. Literacy for Life has recently expanded to serve adult learners in the Lower Peninsula. This part-time, contract position is for an ABE Instructor in Newport News. |
Position Summary | Please Note: This is a courtesy posting for Literacy for Life and not a William & Mary position. Function: To develop and administer phonics-based ABE reading and writing instruction to adult learners at Educational Functioning Levels 1-2. Specific Duties: • Prepare instruction and activities using the UFLI Foundations curriculum • Supplement UFLI curriculum with activities to engage adult learners • Utilize a variety of instructional techniques, to include individualized instruction, pairing, group work, and whole class instruction • Develop learning plans for each student and update learning plans after 40 hours of instruction • Oversee and manage volunteer teacher aides in the classroom and ensure they have the teaching resources needed to facilitate small group and/or individual activities • Maintain and report accurate learner attendance • Contact students who have missed several consecutive lessons •Ensure that the classroom environment is welcoming and conducive to learning This is a contract position. Classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:30 – 7:30p.m. |

Required Qualifications | College degree required. Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills. Ability to multi-task and work collaboratively. Experience with phonics-based instruction. Experience as a reading specialist, working with diverse populations and/or experience working with adults. |
