Position Summary
Indiana University is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Linguistics Department for the 2023-2024 academic year with the possibility of renewal. The position involves a combination of grant development and independent and collaborative research, with additional possibilities in areas such as data infrastructure management and/or public outreach. The position is part of the developing collaboration between Dr. Shobhana Chelliah’s Computational Resource for South Asian Languages project (CoRSAL) and Dr. Kelly Berkson’s Chin Languages Research Project (CLRP). The shared mission of these projects is to engage seriously with community language activists and build university-community partnerships while improving scholarship and outcomes in language documentation. Grant development and submission is a crucial component of this position.
Successful candidates should bring research experience related to current methods in community-engaged language documentation and revitalization, ethnographic linguistics, anthropology, or related fields, and demonstrated strengths in proposal conceptualization, writing, and organizational skills.

Essential duties:
  • Researching grant opportunities in alignment with project mission and vision
  • Supporting the completion proposals by determining concepts in consultation with PIs, gathering and formatting information and co-writing drafts
  • Supporting PIs in meeting proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, approval, and transmittal
  • Nurturing relationships with key stakeholders, including the PIs, graduate and undergraduate members of the CLRP, the Chin community of Indiana, CoRSAL stakeholders, and related scholars and community members
  • Developing familiarity with the suite of current CoRSAL and CLRP projects
  • Conducting independent and/or collaborative research in alignment with the postdoc’s own research interests and agenda
  • Participating in the intellectual life of the broader community at IUB, for example by attending departmental colloquia and events, engaging with Area Studies departments or the Center for Refugee Studies, etc.
Basic Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctorate in linguistics, anthropology, cultural studies, South and Southeast Asian Studies, Museum/Archival Studies, or related field by the start date of appointment.
  • Evidence of independent scholarship and team collaboration
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Outstanding academic writing skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence and to the IU Charter


Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with collaborative grant-writing
  • Experience with community-engaged research
  • Experience with Indigenous or minoritized community language documentation
  • Prior publication experience at peer-reviewed journals
