Department:

The Life Safety Systems Specialist is responsible for the monitoring, inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair of fire extinguishers, fire/smoke dampers, and fume hood flow certification throughout campus buildings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Annually perform air velocity tests using hot wire anemometer to ensure minimum airflow requirements on fume hoods.
  • Annually perform fire extinguisher maintenance including conductivity test of all carbon dioxide hose assemblies, ensure extinguishers are in proper operating condition, safety seats, tags, and pressure gauge reading.
  • Identify 5-year and 6-year required certifications on fire extinguishers and replace them with newly certified extinguishers.
  • Perform 4-year requirement of fire damper inspection and testing scope as well as Read blueprints and drawings.
  • Maintain records by documenting service and repair. 
  • Inspect and evaluate campus life safety systems and related safety equipment.
  • Provide hands-on support during fire systems inspection and testing, and operational and technical support to maintenance shops. 
  • Communicate and work with customers, contractors, and other staff in a professional, positive manner, and train co-workers. 
  • Maintain databases and records as required and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Operate departmental vehicles, typical hours 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM and may work overtime and subject to 24-hour call. 

Minimum Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 100 hours training in operating electrical tools and equipment (or 1 month exp.)
  • 1 course in electrical/mechanical systems (or 1 month exp.)
  • Fire Systems Certification and /or equivalent combination of education or experience
  • A Valid driver's license; computer literacy
  • Successful completion of a background check required
