Licensed Practical Nurse –Tower 8 Nephrology – East Hospital

90% of time Collaborates with the RN and other members of the patient care team in providing patient care and documenting observations and care given.

  • Provide nursing care in accordance with the Ohio Board of Nursing Scope of Practice for LPNs and OSUWMC policies and procedures.
  • Observes, reports, and records signs and symptoms as well as other factors pertinent to the patient’s condition and compliance with prescribed therapies.
  • Safely and appropriately operates patient equipment such as infusion pumps,  mobility devices, specialty beds, leg compression devices, and pressure relief devices
  • Administers medications consistent with the rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing
  • Maintains universal precautions and infection control standards.
  • Documents care given; reports changes in patient condition to the RN or LIP.
  • Demonstrates understanding of job responsibilities and uses appropriate knowledge and skills to effectively complete work.
  • Works with team to deliver appropriate nursing care in emergency situations, including implementing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, assisting with ERT/Med Assist/Code Blue and life safety readiness.
  • Adheres to regulatory compliance standards
  • Assists with maintaining a safe environment for patients
  • Reinforces instructions provided by RN and provides patient information
  • Works effectively as a team member and maintains a positive relationship and open communication with other team members.  Promotes a safe, positive and healthy work environment.
  • Participates in educational and professional development opportunities
  • Systematically organizes and prioritizes work to maximize productivity and carryout orders within appropriate time frame
  • Demonstrates compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors and other staff.  Is courteous to others and promotes mutual respect.

5% of time Participates with team in quality assessment and improvement activities

  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in patient care and organizational processes.
  • Contributes to performance improvement of the Medical Center, the unit and the patient care team.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest quality of service to all customers.

5% of time assumes other duties as assigned

Organizational Expectations

Practices within the Medical Center’s policies and procedures, and Division of Nursing Standards of Practice, including attendance and dress code policies. Maintains infection control standards, implements appropriate patient safety protocols as necessary. Adheres to the OSUWMC mission, vision, and values as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals. Supports the nursing professional practice model.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:        

Graduation from recognized practical nurse program, current Ohio LPN license and certification in intravenous medication administration.  Previous patient care experience preferred

On going:

Maintains current Ohio license and intravenous medication certification.  Maintains competence in technical, interpersonal and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions. Meets mandatory educational and health requirements.
