The Library Specialist II will be responsible for providing standard and routine front desk service and excellent customer service Sunday through Thursday, during afternoon and evening hours. They will maintain the electronic gadgets for checkout by patrons and maintain and pull current journals as needed. What You Need to Know

Starting Salary: $17.25 per hour

Work Schedule:

  • Able to work Sunday through Thursday, from 11:30 am – 8:00 pm with a 30-minute lunch included.

  • Able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency

  • Able to work early evenings or days during summer and periods between academic semesters

Required Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three years of related library experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • General knowledge of library services and functions

  • Knowledge of email, spreadsheet, and library online research database searches and or processing

  • Great interpersonal skills

  • Reliable attendance

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

  • Great conflict resolution skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift or move medium weight boxes, books or similar items, push a heavy book truck

  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores

  • Ability to perform extensive bending and reaching

  • Ability to extensively view a computer screen and use a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball type of point-and-click device

  • Ability to move throughout the buildings, including narrow aisles and small study rooms

  • Ability to operate key and numeric keypad door locking systems

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • One year of TAMU experience as a Library Specialist I

  • Experience in academic library setting.

Responsibilities:

  • Desk Operations: Provides routine Circulation Services. Maintains a front desk operations atmosphere that promotes customer satisfaction. Has knowledge of all TAMU Libraries’ units, directs patrons to appropriate departments. Explains library policies and procedures with a thorough understanding and knowledge of said policies and procedures; refers to appropriate supervisor when necessary. Monitors the front doors; enforces the food/drink policy.  Makes rounds, monitors activities in the building and straightens public areas. Documents emergencies/mishaps/unusual situations. Acts as proctor in the event of an emergency. Solves routine equipment malfunction problems, helps solve routine customer problems and answers complaints from customers as they arise. Documents and brings serious procedural or customer dissatisfaction issues to the attention of the Library Manager. Assists with coordinating the workflow and assignment of tasks/projects to student employees under the supervision of the Library Manager and supervises that work during the evening and Sunday hours. Opens library building on Sundays.  Assists student workers in confrontational or hostile situations.

  • Gadgets and Stacks Maintenance: Adds, organizes, takes inventory and troubleshoots BLCC’s electronic gadgets for checkout by patrons (laptops, headphones, chargers {phone & computer}, calculators, and tablets. Maintains the pulling, processing and sending of current journals to the Serials unit. Assists with the maintenance of stacks, journals (bound & current), new books, audio books, BLCC Stacks and BLCC Reference. 

  • Service Desk backup: Provides desk coverage to other Library service point locations across campus as needed and assists with covering for staff shortages and/or special hours (ex: extended hours for finals).

  • Emergency Response: Responds and takes appropriate action when security and/or fire alarms are set off or other building crises occur, facilitates safe evacuation, implements administrative Call Tree, and performs post event department checks, as appropriate.

  • Collaboration: Collaborates with other support staff. Provides best service possible to library users through participatory decision-making and implementation of operations and guidelines. Supports quality of work life initiatives and attends library and unit meetings and trainings, and performs other duties as assigned.
