What We Want

The Library Specialist I will be responsible for shelving, straightening, shifting and shelf-reading of the library’s Microforms Collection and SuDocs call numbers to achieve their maximum availability for library users. They will assist in the shelving of materials in the Library’s collections, especially during peak load periods. What You Need to Know

Starting Salary: $15.85 per hour

Work Schedule: Able to work Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with one hour lunch break included. Able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • One year of related library, customer service or office experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

  • Knowledge of email, word processing spreadsheets and internet searches

  • Great interpersonal skills

  • Reliable attendance

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items

  • Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores

  • Ability to work in narrow aisles and involving bending, reaching, stretching, stooping, and lifting activities as well as standing for extended period of time

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Previous library, shelving or stacking experience

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress and SuDocs Call numbers

  • Ability to learn basic library organization, terminology, and materials

  • Ability to quickly and accurately put items in order alphabetically and numerically as required

  • General knowledge of library services and functions

Responsibilities:

  • Collection Maintenance: Shelves, straightens, shifts and shelf-reads both library’s Microforms Collection in a variety of formats (books, microfilm, microfiche, micro cards, etc.) and SuDocs call numbers to achieve their maximum availability for library users. Collects used microforms from the 3rd floor Evans microforms area and re-shelves them daily. Ensures that all materials are available in a timely manner.

  • Shelving Unit Support: Assists with shelving materials in the collections. Assists with shelf reading or clean-up of targeted areas needing attention. Assists in shifting activities.

  • Administrative Support: Compiles unit statistics for shifting projects, scanning, space data and student employee attendance. May assist in day-to- day training and monitoring new student employees and performs other duties as assigned.
