Job Description

Provides circulation, basic reference, and general information services to students, faculty, staff, and other library users through the daily operations of the Library Services Desk, using the library’s integrated online system and other resources.  Helps library patrons access computers and other equipment in the Learning Commons, and the Innovation Lab, and locate material on the bookshelves. Manages billing for user services and initiates direct contact with library patrons to retrieve overdue equipment and material. Acts as a main point of contact for special borrowers. Assists with poster printing for students and faculty. Hires, supervises and schedules student assistants in the department. Assists with other User Services Department and Library activities as necessary. Includes regular evening and weekend hours, opening and closing the building, and extended hours during finals. Serves on library committees as appropriate.

  • Participates in the daily operation of the Library Services Desk, which includes providing services directly to the public using an integrated online catalog system, including check-ins, check-outs, maintaining patron records, promoting good customer relations.
  • Recommends process and/or policy improvements based on patron behaviors, services, and library operations.
  • Assists patrons in person with basic reference and directional questions.
  • Assists patrons with library technology issues related to library services such as printing, Microsoft Office Suite, and accessing Canvas, and troubleshoots issues with printers in the Learning Commons. Seeks assistance from the Library’s Technology Training and Support Specialist as needed.
  • Helps patrons locate items throughout the library; assists with the use of electronic resources, and equipment, including computers, microform readers/printers/scanners, audiovisual equipment, printers, 3D printers, sewing machines, and other library technology and equipment.
  • Communicates with patrons via email, phone, and chat.
  • Monitors building activities, resolves problems regarding circulation functions and building activity.
  • Reports maintenance and safety issues appropriately.

  • Responsible for preparation of monthly charge report, Processes refunds, manages and supervises all circulation records including non-university borrowers.
  • Processes transcript holds.
  • Processes clearance forms upon resignation of university employees (faculty, staff, graduate assistants, etc.) in accordance with university procedures.
  • Works with borrowers to ensure overdue materials are returned to the Library.
  • Compiles and maintains circulation statistics. Contributes to the preparation of annual reports.
  • Creates and maintains documentation of circulation desk policies and procedures.
  • Assists in printing academic posters on the library’s wide format poster printers.

15%  

  • Handles requests and complaints with all constituents including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and non-university borrowers.
  • Supports the Library’s partnership with Ben Franklin High School to ensure that its students and faculty have appropriate access to the Library’s resources.
  • Supervises student assistants.
  • Assigns library carrels to visiting faculty and graduate students.
  • Serves on library committees as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, and relevant work experience.
  • Strong public services orientation.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Familiarity and experience using an integrated library system including circulation and report functions.
  • Willingness to be flexible and learn new processes and skills in an evolving and dynamic work environment.
  • Proficient knowledge and use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work independently and seek assistance for additional training as needed.
  • Ability to work productively with diverse groups in an urban academic setting.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Physical ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs., reach, bend, and twist at the waist.
  • Ability to move through the library floors as needed to assist patrons wherever they are located and clear the building as needed and as part of closing procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows Integrated Library System.
  • Experience using Springshare content management system including LibGuides, LibCal, LibWizard, and LibStaffer.
  • Experience working at an academic library circulation/reference desk.
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and Sharepoint.
  • Experience with Canvas LMS.
  • Interest in library makerspaces.
  • Familiarity with 3D printers, milling machines, sewing machines, and other makerspace equipment.
  • Past use of wide format printers (loading and unloading paper and toner).

Salary: $39,000-$50,000
