Job Summary/Description
Under general supervision by the Head of Technical Services, this professional position provides original and complex cataloging of library materials in all formats including monographs, serials, electronic resources, special collections, media, and musical scores. Ensures compliance with cataloging and classification rules/standards. This position may serve as library liaison to one of the university colleges as assigned by the Library Director. The position may direct activities of one f/t employee and/or one student employee. Assists with reference and research guide maintenance.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
  • Performs original cataloging, verifying accuracy against corresponding data in similar MARC records. Performs copy cataloging by editing downloaded MARC bibliographic records according to guidelines in all subject areas and formats, expanding and verifying the data to conform to library standards. Maintains consistency in the cataloging and classification of library materials.
  • Utilizes these professional cataloging tools to assign call numbers, subject headings, and other descriptive information to all library materials: Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.
  • Works with Head of Technical Services to organize and prioritize the unit projects and workflows including maintaining and updating unit procedures.
  • Performs reference/research assistance as assigned by Associate Director of Research and Collection Management.
  • Contributes to other professional activities of the Research and Collections Unit such as maintaining research guides, serving as library liaison to a university college, assisting with collection development, and staying current on professional theory and practices through literature, training, and networking; may serve on additional library or university committees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of best practices, trends, and standards of cataloging operations in an academic library setting.
    • Knowledge of/or ability to catalog a variety of physical and electronic library materials.
    • Knowledge of/or ability to learn the use of appropriate digital technology (hardware and software), such as Voyager, MarcEdit, OCLC Connexion, RDA Toolkit, and Classification Web.
    • Knowledge of /or ability to learn and apply the following cataloging tools: RDA, LCSH and LCC, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data.
    • Skilled in oral, written, and interpersonal communications.
    • Demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English; to perform basic mathematical calculations; to learn and use the online library database system.
    • Strong interpersonal, research, analytical, organizational, and time management skills, as well as attention to detail.
    • Ability to work effectively in both a team setting and independently and be strongly service oriented.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program, including coursework in information organization, access, and retrieval; advanced cataloging and classification.
    • Knowledge of the purpose of cataloging and familiarity with MARC records and the Library of Congress classification system or equivalent.
    • One year of cataloging experience in an academic library or equivalent course work.
    • Familiarity with and ability learn to use OCLC Connexion Client, MARC21, RDA, LCSH, and LC Classification.
    • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
    • Competent with basic MSOffice suite applications.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Competent with MSOffice suite applications Excel and Access.
    • Some foreign language skills.
    • Experience with MS Excel and Access.
    • Experience with an ILS, preferably Voyager.
