Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Government works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. The School offers up to 200 courses, webinars, and conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. Faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government. The School is also home to a nationally ranked graduate program in public administration and specialized centers focused on information technology and environmental finance.
Position Summary
The Legal Research Associate will be responsible for performing legal research, analysis, and writing to support the short- and long-term needs of SOG faculty working in multiple fields, likely including local government law, local government finance, and civil and criminal law and procedure. The Associate will initially dedicate approximately 50% of their time to research, analysis, writing, cite-checking, and other tasks related to a project focused on local government finance law. For the remaining portion of the Associate’s time, and after that project concludes, they will be a member of a larger research team that is responsible for research, cite-checking, legal writing, reviewing draft publications, and providing other related research assistance on a wide range of legal topics.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Strong legal research and writing skills, organizational skills, oral communication skills, and computer word processing skills are required. The ideal candidate will be meticulous and have demonstrated project management skills as well as experience in practical research.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Strong preference for individuals holding a J.D. Interest and or experience in government is helpful.
