Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The UNCG School of Theatre’s mission is to prepare students to be informed theatre practitioners with commitment to creativity, innovation, inclusion, and the advancement of the art form. The School recognizes the need to move toward creating an actively anti-racist and anti-biased space of creative practice by creating systemic change through workshops, continuing education, and professional development centered around anti-racist practices, theatrical intimacy, and bettering ourselves in service of our diverse and intersectional student body. Our community seeks candidates who are invested in creating communities of practice and care in which access is paramount. We have 17 full-time, professionally active faculty members who serve over 300 students in BA and BFA concentrations and in MFA programs in Acting, Design, Directing, and Theatre for Youth. The School mounts a yearly season of seven-to-eight plays and musicals, along with student-driven work and other types of performance opportunities. The School of Theatre is committed to creating and developing a diverse, engaged, artistically well-balanced body of future theatre professionals, performers, and teachers.
Position Summary
The School of Theatre at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro invites applications for a 12-month, non-tenure-track Professional-Track Lecturer/Sound Engineering beginning August 1, 2024.
Professional-Track Lecturer/Sound Engineering Job Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Teach two organized courses for the School of Theatre each semester – possibly including but not limited to Stagecrafts: Technical Production
  • Interact kindly respectfully and effectively with people (including students, faculty/staff, audience members, etc.) regardless of different age brackets;, cultural, ethnic, or and socio-economic backgrounds;, (dis)ability;, sexual orientation;, or gender identity.
  • Serve as an academic advisor to students in the School of Theatre
  • Participate in School, College, & University Service
  • Supervise undergraduate assistants, work-study students, and Stagecraft/Practicum students
  • Mentor sound technicians and sound designers
  • Contribute to the mentoring of electricians alongside lighting/media faculty
  • Attend design & production meetings
  • Attend technical & dress rehearsals
  • Read and respond to rehearsal and performance reports as necessary.
  • Maintain sound equipment and related inventory in School of Theatre performance spaces
  • Assist in maintaining the Electrics Shop
  • Teach and enforce UNCG and School of Theatre safety policies during load-in & strikes, technical rehearsals, and performances.
  • Oversee students in the implementation and management of all sound aspects of productions staged by the School of Theatre, including, but not limited to: load-in, notes, technical & dress rehearsals, performances, and strike
  • Track and report budget status to the Director of Production
  • Prepare detailed estimates of time & money needed for the sound elements for each production or event.
  • Advise on matters of production requirements, feasibility, technology, etc.

The salary range for this position is $50,000–$55,000. This two-year, full-time faculty appointment is renewable and includes benefits. When the North Carolina state legislature approves cost-of-living increases for state employees, professional-track faculty receive the same cost-of-living increases as tenure-track faculty. Professional-track faculty at UNCG have the possibility for standing for promotion from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer after five years of service and then from Senior Lecture to Principal Lecturer after another five years of service. Each promotion comes with a base salary increase. Professional-Track Faculty can request, at the time of hire, that years of service in comparable appointments at one or more external institutions be recognized as service time at UNCG for purposes of meeting the five-year minimum period for promotion.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree & professional experience and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. This position requires the ability to climb ladders and stairs, work at heights, and the ability to lift 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching and supervising students a diverse student population in a theatrical setting at a collegiate level
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industry standard audio techniques and equipment
  • Experience mixing large musicals (singers and musicians)
  • Experience in creating sound designs for non-musicals
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety standards and other entertainment industry standards
  • Proficient with repair and maintenance of audio equipment
  • Experience with Yamaha Audio Consoles and Dante networking
  • Experience with Shure Wireless Microphones and Wireless Workbench
  • Computer literacy (Vectorworks, QLab, ProTools, Audacity, MS Office, MS Outlook, MS Teams)
  • Proficient with counterweight stage rigging systems
  • Proficient with arena rigging methods
  • Valid Driver’s license

Additional Qualifications
  • Proficient in theatrical/entertainment lighting – including, DMX (networked and wireless), Intelligent Fixtures, digital lighting consoles
  • Experience with ETC consoles, dimmers, networking systems
