Essential Duties and Responsibilities | Responsibilities include teaching all levels of American Sign Language and/or Deaf Studies theory. The standard teaching load is 5 courses per academic year (typically 5/5), although this load may be modified by the Chair pursuant to significant service assignments. |
Required Qualifications | Requirements include a minimum of an M.A. or M.S. in Deaf Studies and/or ASL linguistics, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education and/or language pedagogy, or a related field; native or near-native proficiency in ASL and English. |
Preferred Qualifications | Preferably two years of experience in college-level ASL teaching in a US college or university; and eligibility to work in the US. Teaching Evaluations for current or former school. |

Department Information | The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to prepare students for success in a global and interconnected world through the study of language and culture. Central to that mission is respecting different cultures and deliberately employing effective intercultural skills in communication. The Department’s languages of instruction include not only Spanish, French, and German, but also the less-commonly taught, critical languages of Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Russian. The most recent language offering in the Department of Modern Languages is American Sign Language, which was added in 2016. Pedagogically too, in the past three decades, the Department has led with the creation of curricula designed specifically for heritage speakers of Spanish, the development of the Spanish Writing and Translation Community Center, the organization of comprehensive tutoring across all of our language offerings, and the development of the Language Acquisition Center to make our curricula among the most Internet- and media-rich learning experiences on campus. Alongside our BA degrees in French Global Studies, Spanish for Global Competence, and Spanish Translation and Interpreting, we have developed a BA in Critical Languages and International Studies (Chinese, German, Korean, Russian), as well as a BA in Modern Languages-Localization and Translation studies and multiple other degree opportunities.
