Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
This instructional design position will assist faculty with the design, development, and implementation of distributed learning delivery methods on the USC-Columbia campus and for the USC Regional system. This position supports faculty in the creation and/or use of best practices for distributed learning courses, especially fully online and blended courses, as well as instructional multimedia and Web course management systems.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in education or related field and one year experience in curriculum development or management, or bachelor’s degree and 3 years related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of two years of experience in course development for distributed learning in higher education. Training or experience is learning experience design, instructional design, and/or online teaching in a higher education setting. Interest in and familiarity with emerging learning technologies. Advanced working knowledge of the Blackboard learning management system and knowledge of quality assessment rubrics such as Quality Matters or Online Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR; Online Learning Consortium).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Experience with current and emerging instructional technologies and pedagogies and with developing Web-based multimedia instructional components. Knowledge of current trends in distributed learning, learning experience design, and instructional design. Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to work across disciplines with diverse clientele. Ability to work with instructional design colleagues to coordinate projects and share information. Attentiveness to details and ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks and frequent interruptions. Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to interact positively with university faculty, staff, and students.

Design and develop technology-enabled course templates and syllabi, engaging and interactive learning experiences (e.g., assignments, multimedia resources, simulations, other activities), and formative and summative assessments to achieve and demonstrate mastery of course learning outcomes. Create and edit original media and convert course materials into appropriate and accessible digital formats. Incorporate pedagogically effective, innovative, and creative styles to enhance the distributed learning experience. Continuously evaluate and improve learning experiences based on feedback from learners and stakeholders.

Consult with faculty on course design, development, and implementation to incorporate best practices and theories of instruction to achieve learning outcomes for new and existing distributed learning courses. Provide information about Web course management tools, multimedia applications, and other technologies. Provide guidance and support to instructors and facilitators in implementing and delivering learning experiences effectively.
