JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State's College of Engineering (CoE) is seeking a Director (Learning Design Manager - Senior Manager) to lead the Office for Digital Learning (ODL) and to provide strategic input on digital learning to the Dean and Associate Deans. The Director will work with all College of Engineering departments and oversee College of Engineering distance education classrooms in coordination with CoE IT.

The Office for Digital Learning provides critical services in support of online and blended degree programs, online and hybrid courses, micro-credentialing, and the integration of technology in residential instruction.

Services provided by ODL include:

  • Research-based instructional design.

  • Development of course elements to increase student engagement, ensure accessibility, and promote academic integrity.

  • Design and development of course sites in Canvas / Canvas Catalog / Open EdX.

  • Design of high-quality online courses using a variety of research-based course design models.

  • Faculty training for lecture capture/streaming in a variety of classrooms.

  • Resolution of technical issues related to student access and use of online course materials.

  • Back-end support to instructors using the Engineering Connect framework.

The Director is the primary representative of the College with Penn State World Campus for existing and new online and blended program offerings and is co-lead of the multi-campus Engineering Connect program. The Director is also the College’s primary contact for the Digital Learning Cooperative, Office of Conferences and Institutes, and Outreach at University Park and will represent the College on a number of university-wide committees dealing with all aspects of digital learning. The Director will work closely with the Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning/Director of the Leonhard Center and Associate Dean for Education to extend and improve the role of digital technologies in engineering education, as well as with the Assistant Dean for Curricular Innovation and Program Assessment to coordinate program proposals for the Penn State World Campus.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership and direction to a learning design team; establish goals, quality assurance practices, and assessment methods; prioritize deliverables; manage workflow and project scheduling to ensure a high level of service to academic partners.

  • Manage a team of learning design staff; promote the research, application, and evaluation of technological approaches; develop and deliver development opportunities.

  • Identify opportunities to leverage and integrate innovative digital learning models, emerging production technologies, experimental approaches, and pedagogical theories with the aim of increasing learner engagement.

  • Establish the online education mission and vision for the College; plan for future development and growth to meet unit needs, including staffing, resources allocation, and equipment access.

  • Develop funding models; plan and administer the budget; oversee grants; advise on and identify opportunities for pedagogical research initiatives.

  • Co-lead the Engineering Connect program, which enhances the retention and persistence of first-year engineering students by supporting faculty at multiple campuses to incorporate a Canvas-based framework of reflective engagements in EDSGN 100 and MATH 140.

  • Represent the unit on committees and at events; build collaborative relationships with faculty, academic leadership, program directors, World Campus, and other educational institutions and vendors; contribute to the larger learning design community at the University to improve teaching and learning strategies; interpret and recommend policies that impact instructional delivery.

  • Design and implement development opportunities for faculty to engage with new research in the field of learning technology; assess the potential impact of new technologies.

Requirements and Qualifications:

This position requires a master's degree and 10+ years of relevant experience, including 3+ years of supervisory experience. Candidates should have excellent leadership skills, including the ability to manage budgets, create highly functioning teams, and communicate effectively with external peers, suppliers, and vendors and across a wide range of internal audiences, such as students, staff, faculty, and administrators. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and will have a record of continuing professional development to stay abreast of the field and to promote pedagogical innovations within ODL and the College of Engineering.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$97,100.00 - $145,700.00
