Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The Law Enforcement Officer I/Public Safety Officer provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of South Carolina Community and property. These are certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws 23-6-430, empowered with full arrest and police authority state wide. They enforce state laws and University rules and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma. Must be 21 years of age, be physically qualified and have no criminal record. Must pass a background investigation and complete the SC Criminal Justice Academy with certification as Class 1-LE prior to performing any police duties and maintain certification. Licensed to operate an automobile.
Preferred Qualifications
One year experience in public safety/law enforcement, a related field, or comparable educational experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role. Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures. Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence. Knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel. Knowledge of the laws of South Carolina, and policies of the University. Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment

Patrols assigned area to prevent crime and detect violations of law and Policy / apprehends and arrests violators. Responds to complaints, reports of violations and requests for assistance. Keeps records and makes reports regarding all activities. Assists with crime prevention measures and programs. Conducts preliminary investigations

Starting Pay range based on certified police experience: 
Officer base no certification                                                     $ 51,000
Officer less than 2 yr certified experience                            $ 53,550
Officer 2 yr certified experience                                              $ 56,228
Officer 3yr certified experience                                               $ 59,039
Lance Corporal (5yrs or more certified experience)            $ 61,991
