Position Overview
The position performs green space and hardscape maintenance to ensure a high quality of landscape care within an assigned area of the campus landscape.
This is an essential position that will be called upon in the event of an emergency and/or university closure.
Duties may include:
  • Water, irrigate and install sprinklers
  • Prune, weed and monitor grass, plants, shrubs and trees
  • Mow, edge, thatch and patch turf
  • Keep landscape and hardscape areas clear of weeds, leaves, trash and other debris
  • Maintain trees up to 20 feet tall
  • Apply and maintain records related to chemical applications and fertilizers
  • Maintain and repair landscaping tools and equipment
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Other
  • Possess a Commercial Pesticide Applicators Certification for the category of Ornamental/Landscape Herbicide Application or able to obtain one within six months of hire
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Ability to respond to emergency calls within one hour and serve on weekend call-out duty on a regular rotation
Additional Preferred
  • Associate’s Degree in horticulture, urban forestry, landscape maintenance or a related field
  • One year of experience in commercial or institutional landscape care operations
  • Certification to operate landscape equipment such as forklifts, tractors, aerial lifts or related equipment
  • Expressed interest in learning and acquiring skills related to landscape maintenance
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Must be able to:
  • Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
  • Climb and work at various heights above ground using ladders, scaffolding, lifts and bucket trucks
  • Carry, lift or otherwise move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Stand and walk continuously throughout the workday
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing duties
  • Work in confined spaces using equipment and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Work in inclement weather conditions
  • Work on uneven and slick surfaces
Degree Requirement Listed degree qualification is required at time of application
