LAN Engineer

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Office of Information Technology (BSPH IT) seeks a LAN Engineer who performs the development and implementation of advanced server hardware configurations, sets up and manages system monitoring tools, sets up and manages automatic software distribution packages, tests changes to the environment, investigates and recommends tools to support environment, and manages customer relations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops the ability to apply basic steps to problem solving, distinguishing between symptoms and causes.
  • Responsible for evaluating current systems, and able to implement procedural or technical changes to address problems that are moderately complex in nature.
  • Leads the creation of functional and procedural guides and white papers and prepares on-call documents.
  • Reviews and establishes documentation standards: change/maintain documentation and critique life-cycle documents.
  • Creates documents and change processes through communicating with peers and presenting issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Teaches others to make optimum use of the operating systems.
  • Uses standard operating system utilities.
  • Has strong knowledge of anti-spyware/anti-virus tools.
  • Uses system knowledge and performs critical thinking to evaluate and resolve technical or procedural problems.
  • Researches and recommends changes to reduce costs and maximize system use.
  • Plans and conducts presentations.
  • Schedules meetings to resolve business issues, and schedules appropriate resources for the meeting.
  • Prepares agendas, performs gate-keeping duties, produces minutes and follow-up action items.
  • Will take on role of a Project Leader for large assignments.
  • Assists in the planning of large-scale systems projects through vendor comparison and cost studies.
  • Aids in meeting target dates.
  • Keeps all groups informed of project progress.
  • Recommends course of action to Project Lead or Manager.
  • Participates in implementing procedures.
  • Knows the purpose of data gathering and analysis.
  • Uses data flow diagrams and documentation to perform.
  • Learns how to work with customers and technical staff to define requirements, create forms, screens, and reports as necessary.
  • Defines file indexes, space requirements, backup and recovery procedures.
  • Familiar with and possibly uses file or db access language.
  • Familiar with basic design structure.
  • Develops the ability to identify crucial data and defines restart/recovery procedures.
  • Learns to design controls and develop strategies for client/server implementation.
  • Must be able to read, design, and create metrics and goals.
  • Develops task estimates utilizing estimate techniques.
  • Develops test plans and develops test problem reports.
  • Interprets logical representations of systems or programs.
  • Trains technical and/or user staff in their work processes and competencies.
  • Provides guidance and direction to technical staff as well as feedback to management for technical performance of analysts.
  • May be required to work off hours as needed in support of changes of the environment as well as on-call responsibilities.

  • Supports and manages department servers and applications running on those servers.
  • Typically, the person who has accountability and responsibility to take down a system.
  • Makes independent decisions, e.g., configuration, server platforms, operating systems, and how to partition.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: Min $62,300 - Max $109,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
