Job Summary:

The Lab Tech I processes all sample types for cytogenetic, FISH, and microarray analysis. This position participates in wet lab maintenance and inventory control, and may be delegated special assignments. This position adheres to established Colorado Genetics Laboratory standard operating procedures, operational and professionalism guidelines, and is responsible for promoting an environment conducive to effective, accurate and efficient mission driven operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Specimen Accessioning and Quality Assurance

  • Receives specimens sent to the laboratory for testing
  • Checks requisition forms and specimens to confirm matching patient identifiers, specimen type and test(s) requested
  • Assigns accession numbers appropriate to test requests
  • Enters accession information into the CGL database
  • Prints culture sheet and barcode labels
  • Transports specimens to the lab for processing
  • Properly records the types of pre-analytic variables found at accessioning for evaluation in the Quality Assurance (QA) Program

Sample Processing and Preparation for Analysis

  • Initiates, maintains cultures, harvests, and prepares slides on clinical samples for chromosome analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies; extracts DNA for microarray analysis; participates in quality control and quality assurance protocols.
  • Selects and performs proper specimen processing methodologies/techniques ensuring high quality cytogenetic / molecular preparations. In conjunction with certified technologists observes, learns and is engaged in process improvement and troubleshooting.  Understands equipment used and decides when to notify senior colleagues regarding possible malfunction.
  • This position must have and/or continually develop core knowledge and understanding of:  1) general principles of biology and genetics, specifically sterile technique and cell culture 2) basic maintenance, care and use of core laboratory equipment and computers 3) safe laboratory practices relative to the handling and disposal of biohazard waste and hazardous chemicals; use of personal protective equipment through UCD training courses and on the job training.

Wet Lab Maintenance and Inventory Control

  • Prepares reagents and media as needed
  • Monitors QC parameters of lab equipment; participates in cleaning and preventive maintenance of lab equipment
  • Handles hazardous waste according to CGL and UCD protocols
  • Cleans and files slides from completed cases
  • Maintains neat, clean and well stocked work areas
  • Participates in supply inventory control
  • May be authorized to purchase supplies through University credit card and/or CU Marketplace.
  • Receives, dates, and stores supplies
  • Independently manages and organizes their wet lab maintenance work assignments

Participates in orientation and training

  • Participates in the orientation and training of new employees, genetics students, residents, and other health care professionals in accessioning, wet lab processing of samples, wet lab maintenance and inventory control

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of experience in a cytogenetics laboratory that includes education or training equivalent to:
  • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses

OR 

  • 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology

SUBSTITUTION:  BS/BA in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution
  • Biology or genetics laboratory working experience
  • Tissue culture experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to process cytogenetic samples that require a higher level of independent decision making (long-term cultures and/or bone marrow samples)
  • Understands proper handling of infectious materials and hazardous chemicals
  • Commitment to quality, accuracy and attention to detail
  • Analytical individual with process-based problem-solving skills
  • Ability to organize, manage and meet diverse workloads and deadlines
  • Engages in effective dialogue within cross functional teams, with faculty and other personnel

·       Contributes to effective troubleshooting, and systematic problem solving

  • Maintains an understanding of HIPAA rules/regulations and CAP laboratory accreditation standards
  • Basic use and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Familiarity with medical terminology in a laboratory setting

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $48,276 - $55,999.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
