The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is seeking for a for a Laboratory Technician to join its team. The Laboratory Technician will provide professional administrative and academic support related to the daily operation of the undergraduate laboratory belonging to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
This position ensures continuous operation of all undergraduate laboratories, oversees and manages the maintenance and repairs of laboratory equipment and facilities, handles operational budget associated with the laboratory instructional program, and liaises with departmental and institutional safety committees.
This position coordinates with GTAs, Instructors, Electronic Shop, departmental administration and other academic units at OU to optimize and maintain the effectiveness of the laboratory instructional program in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This position will provide assistance to research staff by conducting simple research experiments, collecting data and samples, keeping records, conducting literature searches, analyzing data, and preparing reports. 

Essential Duties: 

  • Manage Instructional Laboratory Services (ILS) stockrooms and associated budgets 
  • Manage the daily operation of undergraduate labs
  • Conduct and arrange for pre-semester tests of ILS and teaching lab safety devices including, but not limited to eyewashes, fire extinguishers (date and charge status), and chemical fume hoods
  • Review and update safety manuals, SOPs, and training protocols in coordination with the department and OU Environmental Health and Safety officers
  • Coordinate equipment repairs with Electronic Shop
  • Update departmental policy for operational protocols for undergraduate laboratories
  • Update chemical inventory list and the equipment inventory lists annually
  • Maintain teaching laboratory equipment and computers in accordance with a monthly maintenance schedule
  • Effect proper storage and disposal of chemicals for undergraduate laboratories
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.
 

Job Requirements

Required: High School Diploma

Skills: 

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and regulations 
  • Proficient with computers including data software and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, and Word)
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to be detail oriented
  • Ability to collect and analyze data
