General Description / Primary Purpose
This position will be responsible for managing safety, maintaining order, and ensuring smooth operations within the areas of Painting/Drawing, Photography, Printmaking, and Graphic Design/Digital Media studios.
Prepares, schedules and supervises the operation of assigned laboratories, and assists in preparation of classes in 2D Studios, including Photography, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking and Graphic Design & Digital Media and assists in the main office for Art, Art History & Design when necessary.
Responsibilities include ordering consumables and equipment, scheduled inventory of supplies and equipment needs (repairs, replacement), preparation for labs for student use and class demonstrations, assist faculty with preparing for classes, supervision of student lab assistants and other related duties.

Essential Duties


Job Function
  • Assists faculty in many aspects of the department’s programs by maintaining assigned labs, studios, digital workspaces, storage areas and prep room in Photography, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking and Graphic Design & Digital Media.

Studio Safety Management
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols and procedures to ensure a secure environment for all faculty, staff, and students.
  • Conduct regular inspections of studio spaces and equipment to identify and address potential hazards.

Material and Supply Management
  • Procure, organize, and distribute materials and supplies required for studio projects and assignments.
  • Monitor inventory levels and reorder supplies as needed to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
  • Studio Operations Management
  • Monitor, manage, schedule and coordinates the use of studio spaces, ensuring equitable access for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assist faculty and students with technical support and troubleshooting related to studio equipment and software.
  • Offer guidance and support to students on project development and execution in collaboration with faculty members.

Marginal Functions
Can be physically demanding with lifting, unpacking supplies, painting studios, organizing inventory, etc.
Can assist with other department needs, including in the Office of Art, Art History and Design and in the 3D areas (Sculpture and Ceramics) as necessary.
Occasionally will be required to drive off campus to pick up supplies for classes.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma and two years of experience directly related to the job functions. Directly related college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Departmental Requirements
Preference shown to applicants who meet the required qualifications and also possess the following: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Photography and 4 years of photo lab experience.
Considerations will be made if applicant has a BFA or Master’s degree in Fine Arts, Studio Art, Art Education or related field with 4 years of lab experience in photography.
Lab Tech should have experience with photographic darkroom, studio lighting, digital photography software and hardware, knowledge of disposal of printmaking and painting/drawing chemicals, handling printmaking acids, fixing printer issues in the Graphic Design & Digital Media, Printmaking and Photography labs.
The Laboratory specialist must possess the following:
  • Excellent organization skills, the ability to concurrently oversee multiple, diverse aspects of lab operations in Photography, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking and Graphic Design & Digital Media: student and faculty safety, supplies, maintenance, disposal, etc.
  • Works well with others or alone, maintains flexibility and have a proven work ethic.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
