The Clinical Department of Pathology, Chemistry laboratory is seeking a qualified candidate to enter patient test orders, process samples in the main laboratory, and process, analyze and accurately report POC & moderately complex tests within established time limits.

 

  • Order and/or process incoming samples (Main Lab and Emergency Department) by ensuring correct labeling, computer log-in, centrifugation, aliquoting, and storage.
  • Load the automation line.
  • Analyze patient specimens for moderately complex testing on instruments and/or by specified manual methodologies within specified turnaround times without sacrificing accuracy.  (Main Lab and Emergency Department).
  • With supervision, process, analyze and report OR specimens for complex PTHI testing.
  • Analyze and record quality control materials with documentation of action on out-of-range values.
  • Accurately transcribe patient data from instrument printouts or worksheets into computer record including any pertinent sample description comments.
  • Perform and record routine instrument maintenance procedures.
  • Monitor instrument error codes, troubleshoot and correct problems as necessary.
  • Record all instrument and QC problems in log book as a means of communication with other operators.
  • Dispense O positive or O negative blood for trauma cases following blood bank guidelines.
  • Answer POC phone during 4:00pm to 7:00am daily and 24X7 on weekends.
  • Perform Point-of-Care duties as designated by the POC Supervisor.
  • Maintain work area in a well-stocked, clean condition.
  • Adhere to all safety/infection control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude in interactions with coworkers, supervisors, other hospital personnel, and hospital patients and their visitors.
  • Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.
  • In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

    Bachelor?s degree in the natural or physical sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary

    The applicant must have:

  • The ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • The ability to work under pressure of time and work volume without sacrificing accuracy.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with other medical personnel.
  • The ability to recognize problems and take appropriate action.
  • Skills basic to the practice of medical laboratory technology.
  • Working Conditions:

  • Work with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
  •  Exposure to noise from laboratory equipment.
  • Participate in rotating weekend and holiday schedule.
    • An associate degree in clinical laboratory sciences or medical laboratory technologist with eligibility for certification, or chemical, physical or biological sciences from an accredited institution is desirable

    This full time, 40 hour position will be on the night shift, and will include rotating weekends and holidays with other staff.
