Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Water Quality, Outreach, and Wellness (WOW) Laboratory in the Maryland Institute for Applied Environmental Health within the University of Maryland School of Public Health is an innovative and collaborative team in the field of microbial water quality. The WOW Lab is working to improve water quality through community-engaged research and outreach. We are seeking a highly motivated individual for the post of Faculty Research Assistant / Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Technician to work on the Water Emergency Team (WET) Project, funded through a University of Maryland (UMD) Grand Challenge Team Project Grant and a NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (NIA). WET is investigating exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria and other waterborne pathogens in underserved African American communities in Baltimore and the surrounding region experiencing sewage backups. The technician will also support other studies evaluating the microbial quality of various water sources including harvested rainwater under Principal Investigator Rachel E. Rosenberg Goldstein, Ph.D., MPH. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing field samples (e.g., water, surface swabs, soil, and produce), using the IDEXX system, performing molecular biology assays (e.g., PCR, bacterial culture from environmental samples), preparing media, maintaining laboratory equipment, using excellent sterile technique, good laboratory practices, and compliance with all biosafety protocols. They may also participate in protocol development and validation studies.
