Job Summary

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at UCSF combines superior resident and medical student training with the highest quality of patient care and innovative research. Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) provides service and conducts research for UCSF’s five integrated facilities: Mission Bay Hospitals, Moffitt/Long Hospitals, San Francisco General Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Mt. Zion Medical Center.

The position is for a technician to assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in research on hearing and deafness. Under supervision, the incumbent will perform technical laboratory and/or field experimental procedures and/or receive training in the more difficult procedures usually requiring a theoretical background in one scientific field.  The candidate is expected to have a strong background in biological wet-lab techniques acquired in school, including working with mice, and be open to learning new methods.

The  position represents an excellent opportunity for the incumbent to develop basic laboratory and research skills in a collaborative translational research environment. The successful applicant will be an energetic, team player, self-directed learner with a keen interest in research.

Note: This position requires a physical/health screening.

Department Description

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco combines superior resident and medical student training with the highest quality of patient care. Beyond our offices, clinics, and laboratories within the 107-acre UCSF Parnassus campus above Golden Gate Park, our Department reaches into the Moffitt Long Hospital, the Ambulatory Care Center, the Medical Center at Mount Zion, and shares UCSF’s partnerships with San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.


Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BS degree in related science and knowledge of or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough and accurate record-keeping skills
  • Excellent organization, problem-solving, verbal/written communication.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals.
  • Coursework/experience with microscopy as obtained in school

SRA II:
  • In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mouse handling, husbandry, and procedures
  • Experience with cochlear physiology, hearing, and deafness
  • Experience with molecular biology (PCR, cloning)
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry and RNA in situ hybridization
  • Experience with confocal microscopy
