Job Description Summary:
GW’s Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine (MITM) conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for HIV/AIDS and neglected tropical diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious and parasitic diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. MITM is searching for a highly motivated Laboratory Technician to work with a team of clinical and basic scientist investigators for vaccine testing and investigate the molecular biology of hookworm infections.
This position provides technical support in a laboratory under direct or general supervision of more senior personnel. The core responsibilities of this position include providing set up and tear down support to faculty, staff and students in the lab or studio, performing lab maintenance, prepping and maintaining equipment for research use, and maintaining stock levels and ordering for assigned laboratory. This position will work according to current Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in the lab which includes: writing and editing of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) and worksheets, following Laboratory Protocols, working under aseptic conditions, and operating under a QC/QA system.
Responsibilities include:
  • Immunology, including serology and cell culture using human derivatives.
  • Processes whole blood derivatives from human volunteers such as plasma, sera, and PBMCs.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with cGMP as well as other laboratory functions.
  • Keeps records consistent with GCP, GCLP, and GMP.
  • Handles of human and animal specimens.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience working in a regulated environment is highly desired.
  • Willingness to work with human and animal specimens, including whole blood derivatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience or knowledge with GCLP or cGMP and molecular biology.
  • Experience or knowledge in processing whole human blood.
Typical Hiring Range Commensurate with Experience.
