JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Abington is searching for a full time Laboratory Technician A to join their team. Duties include:

  • Set up equipment and provide supplies as required in laboratories
  • Organize and maintain Biology Department collections and supplies consistent with changing requirements
  • Assist with the modification and development of new laboratory experiments and procedures
  • Prepare media, slides, cultures, solutions and other materials for use in biology laboratories
  • Operate, clean and perform routine user maintenance on autoclave, oven, still, incubator, centrifuge, environmental chambers and other biology laboratory equipment
  • Propagate required laboratory plant specimens and provide normal care such as watering and fertilizing the existing plant collection
  • Collect biology materials for Biology Department collections
  • Assist with ongoing biological research projects being conducted by faculty members
  • Transfer live micro-organisms to prepared sterile media; incubate over night and prepare slides ensuring pure culture, as directed
  • Assist faculty members as required by taking roll, proctoring examinations, returning papers, assisting in teaching labs and demonstrating the proper use of equipment
  • Exercise control over certain types of live bacteria and viruses and propagate stock control
  • Maintain inventory and assist in ordering and checking instructional supplies and equipment
  • Prepare slides of bacteria, fungi, sputum, feces, blood, etc., stain samples to enable direct observation
  • Direct the work of part-time students
  • Assist students working on independent study projects

Job Requirements: Requires the use of shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, various types of adjustable measuring instruments and the training generally applicable in a particular or specialized occupation. Equivalent to 1 to 3 years applied trades training. Over 18 months up to and including 24 months of effective experience.

Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Days Off:     Saturday, Sunday
