The Department of Dermatology has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Laboratory Technician to work in Miami, FL.  The Laboratory Technician performs comprehensive clinical laboratory procedures of low and high complexity. The incumbent leverages knowledge in biological sciences to perform general laboratory responsibilities, such as processing patient specimens, maintaining laboratory equipment, performing data entry, and preserving laboratory records.

  • Receives and accepts samples from clinics and hospitals, separates them by type of tests required, and distributes to different laboratory sections that will perform each specific type of test.

  • Enters accessioning data into computer systems.

  • Compares accessioning records to samples received to ensure accuracy, investigates missing samples, and performs quality assurance on all accessioned samples.

  • Transports samples from clinic or hospital to laboratory in compliance with CLIA and ASHI standards.

  • Processes and dispatches specimens to reference laboratories or centers, ensuring that viability is maintained by proper preservation.

  • Performs preparation of reagents and controls.

  • Maintains rooms and equipment clean and functional.

  • Provides support to physicians and clinic staff.

  • Organizes stock, maintains inventory, and places orders.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  • Commitment to the University’s core values.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

Department Specific Functions

  • ACCESSIONING - Sort specimens from couriers and label with unique identifying number on accessioning form and corresponding bottle. Enter accessioning data into computer. Prepare supplies in shipping boxes to be sent to clients. Record slides sent for consult in Consult Book and give an accession number. Prepare consult slides to be returned to clinician’s office.

  • INFORMATION FOR STATISITICS - Enter the data from the previous days Specimen Data Information log sheets into the computer Excel spread sheet. Enter the current days accessioning data into computer. Enter statistics from previous day into computer Excel sheet.

  • PREPARE SPECIMENS FOR PROCESSING  -  Label cassettes and prepare work area Cut tissue according to standard protocol for dermatology. Mark margins on tissue for skin excisions

  • PREPARATION of RESEARCH MATERIAL - Accession material submitted for research studies. Prepare cassettes and/or slides for research studies

  • FILING & MISCELLANEOUS DUTIES - File glass slides and/or paraffin blocks in numerical order. Facilitate the disposal of old request/report forms. Replenish solutions in tissue processor according to schedule.

  • Other related duties as assigned.
