Job Summary:

The Department of Orthopedics is seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Science Professional with experience in cell biology and/or animal translational research. The candidate will join a multidisciplinary team whose research focuses on regenerative medicine approaches for osteoarthritis and articular cartilage injuries. The key activities for this position include isolation and expansion of primary human and animal musculoskeletal cells, as well as work with translational animal models to test regenerative therapeutics.   

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and support the Principal Investigators and other group members with laboratory and research functions.
  • Isolation and expansion of human and animal bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts for in vitro experiments.
  • Assist with a variety of musculoskeletal surgical procedures
  • Tissue harvest and repair tissue characterization, which includes microCT, and processing tissues for histology
  • Molecular analyses (qPCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence)
  • Sectioning paraffin embedded tissues or cryosectioning
  • Record and compile accurate records, laboratory protocols, and communicate summaries of experimental results including organizing and maintaining research data, ensuring accuracy and proper documentation

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Two (2) years professional level research experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or related field.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory.
  • Experience with harvesting tissues (bone, cartilage).
  • Histology staining (immunohistochemistry/immunocytochemistry) of tissues and cell lines, and microscopy.
  • Experience working with primary cell cultures, especially bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells and chondrocytes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic to proficient knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Willingness to work with animals
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with moderate supervision.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Determine methodologies and evaluate lab procedures impacting the quality and timeliness of research
  • Organize, supervise, and manage the day-to-day operation of the laboratory
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as

Entry: $42,088-$53,536

Intermediate: $45,801-$58,259

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
