The Immunology Department at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine is seeking to hire a highly motivated Laboratory Technician. The applicant should be interested to join an ambitious and energetic team to help with the discovery of novel mechanisms in host-microbe interactions (see Meisel et al., Nature 2018;, Pandey et al, Cell Host Microbe 2022; Bender et al., Cell 2023). Experience with basic microbiology techniques is a plus. The applicant should be able to perform in vitro microbiology experiments. The applicant should be very eager to learn new techniques and improve existing techniques. Applicants that are interested in having their own independent project are encouraged to apply.



Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.


Essential Functions 

1. Be able to perform standard microbiology techniques (culture of bacteria) as well as culturomics on mouse and human tissue (e.g. tumor, liver, spleen, cornea of eye). 2. Be able to assist in Imaging of commensal bacteria in tissue. 3. Excellent organizational and coordination skills and attention to detail is essential. Excellent writing, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to work independently and in collaborative team environments is a plus. 4. Capacity for independent intellectual contribution and project management, attention to detail, good organizational skills, and ability to record experiments performed and results.


Physical Effort 

Light – Maximum lifting of up to 20 lbs. With frequent lifting/carrying of up to 10 lbs. or a negligible amount; significant moving may be required or may involve sitting with a degree of pushing and pulling.
