Position Information

Coordinate and manage all field and laboratory activities associated with the Wilson Lab at the Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

The full salary range for Laboratory Researcher Supervisor 1 is $64,300 - $114,300.00 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $64,300 - $80,000 annually. We base salary offers on various considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we cannot sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time.  Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines.
Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates.
Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques.
Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional/experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment.
Ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings.
Leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space.
Solid interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise staff.
Laboratory adminstrative experience (purchasing, health and safety etc.). Development of standard operating procedures, ensuring PPE etc for lab safety certification, use of purchasing card etc.
Field entomology skills, including insect observation, collection, preservation, transport and identification.

Independently develop and implement lab/field experimental procedures based on general guidance from PI. Preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-review journals, or projects reports for submission to funding agencies. Review, interpret, summarize and integrate scientific literature relevant to the lab/field experiments.
Knowledge of insect colony maintenance and rearing, including provision of food/water, adjusting light/temperature/humidity conditions, monitoring colony health and hygiene, and use of biological incubators.
Strong knowledge of agronomic and ecological aspects of orchard/vineyard crop production in California. Familiarity with current research and extension activities in tree nut, stone fruit and figs in California.
Insect collection, monitoring, transportation and preservation. Familiarity with current research and extension activities in tree nut, stone fruit and figs in California. Review, interpret, summarize and integrate scientific literature relevant to the lab/field experiments. Skills to manipulate small organisms with forceps, tweezers, paint brush etc.
Insect identification to genus or species. Coordination of ID work with other relevant entomology museums, both within the UC and in other states/countries. Competency to work with stereo and imaging microscopes, sometimes for long periods of time (>4 hours/day)
Operation of large SUVs/ATVs and associated equipment (e.g. trailers) used in field research. This also includes coordinating vehicle care/maintenance with UC Fleet Services.
Ability to work under extreme environmental conditions (>95F / <50F, sunny, windy, dusty etc.) for long periods of time (8 hours/day) and independently lift 50 lbs.


Preferred Qualifications

Ability to operate vehicles, including the lab vehicles (large SUVs), electric golf cart, 4-wheel drive all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles (e.g. Gators), as well as hitch/tow a large trailer to/from field sites including loading/unloading of the ATVs.
