Laboratory Research Operations Technician - Nanotech West Nanofab


Department:
ERIK | Nanotech West Lab

Provides support to the Nanotech West Laboratory, a 24/7 user-based research lab facility supporting the fields of micro- and nanofabrication, energy/battery research, chemical vapor deposition and infrared material and device characterization; supports all lab equipment in the Nanofab (cleanroom) with a focus on photo and electron beam lithography equipment and processing and plasma etch equipment by monitoring and performing preventative maintenance as needed; performing routine and periodic process monitoring; supporting general laboratory operations. Maintaining laboratory notebook or similar digital notebook to document process and tool monitors, tests, results, etc. is required. This job will entail a significant amount of time in a cleanroom environment.  Must be able to lift 25 pounds regularly.  Target start date is 22 January 2024.

40% Time monitoring photolithography and electron beam lithography process and equipment, including resist spin coating, layout and data preparation for lithography, UV exposure with contact aligners and direct write laser systems, development, inspection, and related materials.

15% Hands on assistance in process development and maintenance, including tool upgrades, material changes, and pattern designs. 

25% Assisting with tool and process monitoring and requalification post maintenance for plasma etch and thin film deposition.

20% Support general lab operations.

Required Qualifications: Associate degree in an engineering field with 0-1 year photolithography processing experience and 0-1 year experience in a semiconductor fabrication facility.  Must adhere to all safety protocols, personal protective equipment, and standard operating procedures. Must be able to lift 25 pounds regularly.

Desired Qualifications: Experience in troubleshooting and repair of simple electronics desired;  experience supporting researchers in a laboratory environment desired. In addition to the required and desired qualifications and experience, the individual in this role will have the ability to work with a diverse group of team members to complete tasks, as well as the ability to work independently; have well-developed communication skills (verbal and written); be comfortable interacting with a diverse group of lab users to assist with training or troubleshooting, ability to be a self-starter, curious about technical problems and willingness to use creative problem solving approaches. 

Hands on experience running the following equipment is a plus: manual resist spin coater, direct write laser writer Heidelberg MLA150, contact aligner, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and chemical wet benches/hoods.

Additional Information:

This is a term position with employment up to January 2026 with the opportunity of extending employment for an additional year pending budget funding is available. The position will be located onsite 5 days a week within operating hours of 8 am to 5 pm. However, we offer options for some flexible scheduling outside of these university standard hours of operations. This is a technical level position. The targeted hourly hiring rate is $17.10 to $22.62. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the candidate's qualifications, and the unit's available budget being the primary determining factor.
