We are seeking a Laboratory Manager who will be responsible for managing the overall operation of the Viral Hepatitis Research Laboratory. The individual will work with the co-manager to manage the laboratories of nine Principal Investigators (PIs) who work closely together and share projects. The individual will manage, supervise, and conduct experiments of the Viral Hepatitis Research Laboratory.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with PIs to hire laboratory personnel for projects.
  • Supervise and train technicians, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students; assign and coordinate tasks in partnership with Pis; assess. productivity/performance; monitor interval work attendance for all lab personnel.
  • Supervise re-training and/or maintenance of training for all lab personnel.
  • Supervise daily lab operations.
              • Provide oversight of technical programs and administrative activities in the laboratory including quality assurance and safety programs
                  • Maintain lab documentation, supervise lab record keeping and inspect lab personnel record keeping and maintain clear standards.


                  Lab Maintenance

                  • Prepare and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
                  • Order lab supplies and work with grants administrator to track laboratory spending on grants.
                  • Maintain lab supplies, purchases, and related records.
                  • Maintain records of attendance at regulatory/training sessions.
                  • Maintain equipment service calls, contracts, and forms.
                  • Track laboratory derived data and results.
                  • Prepare for inspections.


                  Repository Management.

                  • Establish new repositories as needed for emerging viral infections related to the laboratory goals.


                  Special Knowledge, Skill & Abilities

                  • Knowledge of scientific concepts, principles, practices and methods used to conduct and manage sound research.

                  • Knowledge of related technology, instruments and equipment.

                  Minimum Qualifications
                  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
                  • Five years related experience.
                  • Proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience in related research.
                  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

                  Starting Salary Range: Min $55,200 - Max $96,600 Annually ($75,900 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

                  JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.                   The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
