The College of Arts and Sciences is seeking (1) an experienced Laboratory Coordinator in the Department of Biology. This position will be responsible for maintaining the microbiology and genetics teaching laboratory spaces, overseeing the operations of multiple lab sections, and preparing needed material for the labs.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO
The ideal candidate for this position will manage services and maintenance for the lab, as well as laboratory equipment and inventory. The Laboratory Coordinator will work closely with graduate teaching assistants, training and mentoring them on the content and experiments of the lab.
The essential duties and responsibilities of the Laboratory Coordinator are the following:
- Laboratory Preparation and Set-Up: Prepare microbiological media, both solid and liquid, ensuring that they are free of contamination.
- Maintain a stock of 21 bacterial cultures and prepare these cultures for use in laboratory activities.
- Set up and break down labs for 18-20 lab sessions per week, currently based on the needs of supplies, instruments, media, and cultures for the weekly lab exercises.
- Monitors laboratory budget and supplies.
- The coordinator will be expected to manage supplies and equipment used by the laboratory courses.
- The lab coordinator will routinely compare vendor pricing options to keep supply costs as low as possible.
- This role will also contact vendors for quotes and coordinate purchasing/receiving with administrators when necessary.
- Supervise and train laboratory assistants: The coordinator will work with graduate and undergraduate assistants to manage the receipt, distribution, set up, and preparation of supplies from week to week.
- Prepare memos and demos for the laboratory graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) and assist with testing experiments to ensure their results.
- Schedule and attend weekly laboratory meetings and assist the GTAs in learning the protocols for upcoming experiments.
- Maintain laboratory space as a BSL 2 laboratory.
- Maintenance of equipment using GSU staff or external vendors to inspect, maintain, or repair equipment; monitoring the labs for compliance with the laboratory safety manual; processing hazardous waste bags and culture tubes and cultures created from labs in compliance with EPA and OSHA regulations.
- Autoclave, wash, and separate tubes are to be re-racked or stored in the cabinet.
- The lab coordinator must continue to stay updated on safety rules and regulations (GSU Safety, EPA, OSHA).
- Assist faculty who may need microbiology or genetic supplies for lecture demonstrations.
- Assist with GTA orientation each semester.
- May teach Foundations of Microbiology Lab, Microbiology Lab, or Genetics Lab.
Qualifications
:
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in the assigned research area; or Bachelor’s degree in the assigned research area and two years of related experience, or a combination of education and related experience.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
- Experience with microbiology, genetics, molecular biology techniques, and teaching undergraduate laboratory courses.
- Communication skills are also expected, specifically with interactions between graduate and undergraduate students.
