Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Laboratory Animal Technician- Jupiter, FL.

Performs all duties of normal laboratory animal care, daily cleaning/sanitation procedures, equipment operation, administration, and supply and environmental monitoring. Ensures proper husbandry and care including housing, feeding, bedding and watering if applicable to various laboratory animal species. Keeps appropriate documentation. Monitors animals for health and well-being daily on workdays and weekend as per rotating weekend schedule.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Ensures proper procedures are followed in receiving animals, feed, bedding and supplies.

  • Examines newly arrived animals for overall appearance and well-being, assigns cage cards and other identification correctly, insures proper handling and caging.

  • Performs transportation of animals, carcasses, supplies etc. following SOP and division/institution specific processes.

  • Monitors environmental parameters as well as animals for health and well-being bringing abnormalities to the attention of supervisor and/or the veterinarian.

  • Assists, as needed, with administering injections, medications venipunctures, and with diagnostic procedures as directed by veterinarian.

  • Documents health of animals and maintains records based on protocols and procedures.

  • Prepares and files all necessary documentations as required by regulations and internal SOP/policies.

  • Performs euthanasia of all laboratory animals insuring their death and proper disposal.

  • Practices and ensures appropriate procedures to maintain building security and reports any deviations immediately.

  • Understands laws and regulations governing animal research and training.

  • Becomes familiar with the Animal Welfare Act and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

  • Assists immediate supervisor and Director in regulatory oversight functions.

  • Communicates with research personnel in a service oriented and professional manner.

  • Offers help to research personnel regarding husbandry and care of their animals and when needed with brief study related procedures.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma and one year of appropriate experience required.

Salary:

$16.00 per hour.
