The Department of Anesthesiology employs over 200 academic and staff personnel and has an annual operating budget of $40 million in annualized resources between Practice Plan Revenues, VAMC funding, Hospital and Medical Group Funding, UC Foundation, Research Sources and School of Medicine Funds. There are over 60 clinical faculty, 12 Ph.D, faculty and post docs, 36 residents, 8 clinical fellows, 27 Certified Nurse Anesthetists, 1 Physician Assistant and four bargaining units represented. The Department provides Clinical Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Services at Hillcrest, Thornton, Shiley, Children's and the VA Medical Center. The Department operates a Pain Clinic at Perlman. The Department's research programs include bench and clinical research programs located at the VA Medical Center, MTF, CTF, Hillcrest, Thornton and Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

This position is located at the VAMC, in the Department of Anesthesiology Research Laboratory.

Under supervision, the incumbent will assist with experiments and data analysis. In addition, the incumbent performs basic laboratory operations, and organizes and cleans lab, as directed. Assigned duties and responsibilities include routine laboratory maintenance and the application of safety requirements. Assists with the preparation of standardized solutions for experimentation, assists in processing standard biochemical assays, maintains and genotypes animal colonies, and sets up rodents for experiments. Performs other related functions as required.

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in Biology, Anatomy or Physiology and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Technical scientific knowledge and skills at the college "lower division" level; or acquired equivalent knowledge and skills through experience.

  • Familiarity with scientific supplies and equipment. Practical knowledge of wrapping instruments and materials for sterilization and operation of steam autoclaves.

  • Ability to follow basic research protocols and follow instructions closely.

  • Familiar with calibration and maintenance of test equipment used in animal studies.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations to calculate addition, subtraction, multiplication, percentages.

  • Able to use a variety of computers, operating systems and software programs including MS Office: Excel, Word, Outlook, and other statistical analysis software.

  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents.

  • Ability to communicate with colleagues and superiors, including asking questions and notification of problems.

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning laboratory supplies and equipment.

  • Ability to create spreadsheets to track and monitor laboratory supplies.

  • Able to perform in an organized manner during periods of data collection.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials.

  • Must be willing to work with small animals and rodents in a laboratory setting.

  • Must be willing to work at the VA Medical Center.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $44,662 - $52,513 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $21.39 - $25.15

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
