Department Description
Department Purpose
The mission of FPS is to produce, maintain, test, distribute, and facilitate the use of virus tested planting stock of deciduous fruit and nut trees, grapevines, strawberries, sweet potatoes and roses to the specialty crop industry.
Job Summary
This position performs tasks related to the organization and maintenance of container grown plant material. Incumbent will be responsible for creating and maintaining database information in the custom program ADAPT concerning movement and progress of plants within the department's facilities, will propagate extremely valuable plant materials for clients, and identify cultural practices required for optimal growth of container grown plants according to established goals and requirements. Independently collect valuable proprietary plant material from fields and nursery facilities using inventory and planting lists, treat, store, and accurately label these materials.
Note: This position is 100% onsite.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Work in lab, greenhouse and field conditions.
  • Work outdoor during different seasons, to perform repetitious work, and to lift and carry large pots, flats or bags of soil. Lift and carry large containers or bundles weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • A valid California driver's license is required to operate a University vehicle to drive to and from the field.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or Plant Sciences, or equivalent experience/training.

  • Knowledge of and experience with plant cultivation in containers, including determination of appropriate media and/or soil to use in propagating a wide variety of plant species and cultivars, understanding of growth habit, pruning techniques, dormancy requirements, nutritional needs, and irrigation practices.

  • Knowledge of and experience with propagation techniques for various types of plant materials, including sowing seed, sticking cuttings, chip and T' budding, and setting runners.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of horticulture, plant sciences, plant pathology, botany, and principles of plant propagation. In particular, greenhouse management, nursery techniques, diagnosis of problems with pot grown plants, pest control, and techniques for the collection, storage, and shipping of dormant cuttings.

  • Demonstrated ability to use computers and database programs with a working knowledge of Windows-based software, including, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to keep accurate inventory lists of transplanted plants, nursery propagations, and indexing work for use in updating the department custom computer database Adapt, and Excel spreadsheets.

  • Ability to work independently with general supervision, setting work priorities involving concurrent, complex tasks.

  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, to interact with diverse people within and beyond the department and to provide customer service for non-university clients.

  • Demonstrated excellent management skills including the ability to work independently with minimal direction, to plan, coordinate, direct, and perform numerous /various tasks simultaneously and efficiently.

  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures related to sale and distribution of plant material, including the licensing and distribution procedures for UC-patented plant materials.

  • Skill in providing excellent customer service including determining availability of a customer's plant materials, estimated delivery times, tracking multiple orders from numerous clients, ensuring that distribution is facilitated by timely shipping or pick-up, and communicating insuring both within FPS and with customers about the status of orders.

  • Ability to recruit, select, hire, train, supervise, evaluate performance, and perform conflict resolution for staff.

  • Knowledge of and ability to identify good quality propagation materials such as cuttings, bud sticks, and seed.
