Job Summary

Dr. Winger’s research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of mutations in kinases and applying those findings to improve the care of children and adults with blood diseases and cancer. The posted position is for a scientist who will manage initial laboratory set up, purchasing system set up, equipment purchases, and general laboratory maintenance tasks, as well as carry out basic molecular biology experiments, including PCR, cloning, western blots, cell line generation, and tissue culture-based experiments such as dose-response assays. The person will also be expected to work up, analyze, and present data. This position requires prior research laboratory experience, proficiency in aseptic techniques, and the ability to design and troubleshoot experiments and work with post-docs and graduate students.

Department Description

The Department of Clinical Pharmacy is one of three departments in the School of Pharmacy (SOP) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Three goals of the School are: creating a new framework for drug discovery and development, ensuring that more patients get the best results from their drugs, and shaping the future of pharmacy science, policy, education, and patient care by working in fresh and collaborative ways. Given the Schools Strategic planning, the Department has also met and adopted a mission and vision statement, under which it operates. The mission statement “To advance the precise, safe, and effective use of medications to improve health through excellence and innovation in pharmacy education, in patient care, education, research, and public service,” the vision statement “To change the face of pharmacy through innovations that improve health,” and the core values statement, “Caring, integrity, diversity, collaboration, and excellence.”

The Department of Clinical Pharmacy is a multi-faceted department with centers, laboratories, and educational programs with many locations at UCSF (Parnassus, Mission Bay, and ZSFG) and throughout the state. It is home to a number of functional units: California Poison Control System (CPCS), Drug Research Unit (DRU), Medication Outcomes Center (MOC), Program for Outcomes, Pharmaceutical Economics, and Policy Studies (PrOPEPS), and
Translational and Policy Research on Precision Medicine (TRANSPERS).

The department also delivers a substantial portion of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum at UCSF with preceptors and faculty appointments without salary (WOS). The department sponsors a large contingent of WOS faculty for qualified preceptors and educators who support our teaching programs at various sites in California.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Hands-on research experience working with cultured and/or primary cells and carrying out cell-based assays in a research laboratory

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD in cellular and molecular biology or related field.
