Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate III / Lab Manager will support the research studies of the Principal Investigator (PI), Tippi MacKenzie, M.D., in understanding the genetics of congenital disorders and developing new therapies to treat them. 

Our work involves both research in animal models and as well as patient samples, in the broad area
of maternal-fetal precision medicine.

The Lab Manger will guide and lead the SRA 2s, volunteers and visiting researchers. The incumbent will manage lab purchases, equipment, and labs safety. The incumbent will be responsible for reporting to the PI and coordinates with the PI, specialists, and scientists regarding planned experiments and results.

Past research associates have secured positions in medical school, graduate school, and the biotech industry. Our close-knit team of scientists and clinicians provides an excellent training opportunity for motivated individuals.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. The Department is comprised of multiple divisions and sections and our surgeons provide care at locations throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Our Residents and Fellows also play a critical role in Department’s success. The Department of Surgery Chair’s Office is an extremely high profile, fast paced environment with a very diverse range of contacts and needs which require an immediate and accurate response, handled with confidentiality, and while staying compliant. The Chair's Office is responsible for management, direction and oversight of over 400 faculty (clinical and research), trainees and staff personnel.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in molecular biology or in a related science and two or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Interest in working with animal models including mice.
  • Strong administrative skills including adeptness in keeping high level tasks in perspective while managing all levels of activity.
  • Lab bench skills including pipetting, tissue culture, antibody staining.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability perform administrative tasks.
  • Microsoft Office skills.
  • Interest in biology and ability to read and understand scientific concepts.
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Meticulous, organized.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in preparing instruments and anesthesia for animal operations, performing operative procedures on animals, and training in post-operative care.
  • 2 years’ training and experience in a research laboratory setting; demonstrated knowledge and/or experience working with animal population.
  • 2 years’ experience with and the ability to care for, work with, and handle small animals.
  • 3 year’s experience in developing working protocols and preparing IRB documents and reports.
  • 2 years’ experience of purchasing making decisions, processing orders and maintaining laboratory equipment.
